The Wood Norton

Wood Norton Hall Hotel- Evesham, Worcestershire

Located in Evesham, Worcestershire, The Wood Norton is a 4* boutique hotel operated by the Bespoke Hotel Group.

The hotel is housed within a Grade II Listed manor house and outbuildings and comprises 50 luxurious rooms and conference spaces, all set within 4,000 acres of breathtaking natural landscape. Originally built as a hunting lodge in 1897 for the exiled French Duc d’Aumale, the estate was sold to the BBC during World War II and subsequently used as a monitoring base, broadcasting centre and Doctor Who film set, before being converted into a 45-bedroom hotel in 1995. The BBC sold the site in 2001 where it has since been in private ownership before being bought by the Bespoke Hotel Group.

As a prestigious site, The Wood Norton has accommodated many high profile guests and events over the years, including the wedding of Princess Louise of Orleans and Prince Charles of Bourbon in 1907. More recently – as part of £4 million refurbishment scheme – The Wood Norton underwent an extensive makeover courtesy of Claridge Architects and ISG.

Reopening its doors in October 2012, The Wood Norton benefitted from a number of works, including the restoration of the main hall, Pear Tree Mews and Smith’s House buildings. Meanwhile, the exterior of the property benefitted from a collection of beautiful gardens and lawns designed by English Heritage garden specialist Peter Baldock.

Working in collaboration with interior designer Sean Vassen, Claridge Architects revived the historic interior of the main hall, by carefully balancing the historic interior with elegant modern elements. The oak panelling – originally installed by the French royal family – was respectfully restored, whilst new interiors – such as the pewter-topped bar and glazed bathroom pods – provided the site with contemporary textures and vibrancy.

The main hall comprises reception rooms, a bar, a British fine dining restaurant and an outdoor terrace. In addition, the main hall includes function rooms, with eight luxury suites located on the first floor and 12 double rooms on the second floor.

Meanwhile, during the extensive refurbishment scheme, Pear Tree Mews – formerly a stable block and coach house – was converted into 30 rooms, all surrounding a cobbled courtyard, whilst Smith’s House was transformed to provide the site with business and conference facilities.

Throughout the entirety of the project, all of the work was conducted sensitively, with many of the site’s original Edwardian features being restored. A second phase of work is now planned at the site to increase leisure facilities, including a spa.

Rooms at The Wood Norton start from £85 per room, per night, which includes breakfast, whilst suites start from £235 per room, per night.

Bampton Design

Bampton Design was chosen by interior designer Sean Vassen of Vassen Designs to supply all the furniture throughout the total refurbishment of The Wood Norton. This project found Bampton supplying furniture for all 52 bedrooms, public areas, dining room and even the staff quarters.

Many of the bedrooms had different designs, shapes, sizes, and specifications. One particular challenge was the introduction of the air conditioning/heating units into the base of the bed. Due to the complexity Bampton made each base specifically to meet the size needed for that room. The end result has provided each room with a unique air conditioning/heating system.

As a leading manufacturer of bespoke classic contemporary furniture the hotel provided the perfect backdrop to provide contemporary and classic furniture with a twist. Bampton have always maintained the idea that should the designer want it, they will try and make it. Bampton were able to take existing pieces from their current range and with small changes by Vassen Designs provide new and exciting pieces.

With some 25 years of manufacturing Bampton always prides itself on creating the look the designer requires.
