Developing facilities on Greenland Road

Heerema Fabrication Group (HFG) – part of The Heerema Group – is a leading contracting group which specialises in the engineering and fabrication of large and complex structures for the offshore oil and gas, and energy-related industries.

HFG has a number of fabrication facilities situated around the North Sea with each designed to conduct pre fabrication work for use on indoor construction projects.

HFG has two facilities in the Netherlands – Heerema Vlissingen and Heerema Zwijndrecht – one in Poland and another in Hartlepool in the UK. HFG’s purpose-built facilities in Hartlepool are located around the sheltered Victoria Harbour, making it a prime location for sea, air, road and rail, and is nestled between Teesside and Tyneside, two of the industry’s major sources of fabrication skills and expertise.

In 2013, HFG implemented a £2.3 million project to construct a steel framed hangar and concrete apron for the preparation and application of anti corrosion systems at its site on Greenland Road, Hartlepool. In addition, the project also involved the extension of an existing storage shed.

Hartlepool based civil engineering company Tangent Construction Limited, was contracted by Heerema Fabrication Group to design and construct the new Blast and Paint Shop Facility, with work reaching completion in November 2013, on budget and within time deadlines. Tangent Construction Limited is a family owned and run construction and civil engineering business specialising in all areas of construction and ground works.

The Greenland Road yard covers an area of 48,311m², with the main fabrication hall measuring 100 x 37 x 30m (LxWxH) and the prefabrication hall measuring 100 x 37 x 8.1m (LxWxH) and is the second Hartlepool Yard following the 28,090m² Yard 1 site, situated close by at Victoria Dock.

As the main contractor on the project, Tangent Construction Limited co-ordinated several local contractors and employed workers from the Hartlepool area. The design was professionally delivered by Hartlepool BC Design & Management.

The underlying ground on the site was poor and the reinforced concrete ground slab required 156no 16m deep concrete piles being driven into the ground by specialist company Bullivant. 50 tonnes of steelwork was provided and 2,000 tonnes of high specification concrete delivered to site by Cemex.

With work now complete on the Greenland Road site, HFG can continue to deliver world leading marine projects to the offshore oil & gas and energy-related industries, building upon their 60 years of experience. Today, HFG enjoys a reputation for fabrication-driven engineering and integrated project management services, which are the cornerstone of a project’s success.

HFG’s expertise includes conceptual design, front-end engineering, detailed fabrication-focused design, procurement, final construction and delivery. Previous projects completed at the Hartlepool site include the Andrew process module, the York platform, the Ensign platform, the Sheringham Shoal substation topsides and the Buzzard platform.

HFG is one of two divisions which make up parent company The Heerema Group, with the other division being Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC). HMC transports, installs and removes all types of offshore facilities, from fixed structures and complex infrastructures to floating facilities.
