Located between Moorgate and Liverpool Street stations, South Place Hotel is an 80-bedroom independent luxury hotel, operated by expert restaurateurs, D&D London.
South Place Hotel was the first purpose built hotel to open in the Square Mile in 100 years and derives its inspiration from many of the things that make the capital buzz: cultural diversity, local neighbourhoods, understated wit and an easy sense of self.
Construction work was completed on the 20-month new build project in September 2012, with Conran & Partners as the interior designer and space planner, whilst Allies & Morrison designed the building itself. Before construction began, the designers and architects carefully worked to ready the neglected site for construction of the new hotel.
Keen to find out more about the rich history of South Place Hotel, Premier Hospitality caught up with Tina Norden, Associate Director at Conran & Partners, to discover how South Place Hotel became a reality.
Discussing the project, Tina said:
“UK real estate fund manager, Frogmore owned the site and considered a hotel a good addition to their business, so they spoke with D&D London with a view to working on a project together. This was an interesting decision as D&D London is not known for being a hotel operator, but are a well-known restaurant operator. However, D&D London had been keen for some time to do something within the hotel sector so when this opportunity came along it was perfect.
“The location is brilliant as it is so close to many captive markets and currently there is not a great deal in the way of high level hotels within the area, so it proved to be a very good idea. Allies & Morrison was already attached to the project, due to their involvement with an office scheme that was previously to appear on the site, so they were retained as the architects. Conran & Partners was then brought on board as specialist hospitality designers to look at the interior and layout of the hotel.”
Tina added:
“South Place is a one-off; both we and D&D London wanted to create something rooted in London in general, and the city in particular. One of the ways we achieved this was by collaborating with local businesses and galleries, like The Hoxton Gallery and Jealous Gallery.”
South Place Hotel boasts a stunning array of rooms, divided into five categories, all offering comfort and relaxation within a carefully designed space. Rooms range from the Dominions and South Place Rooms, through to Eldon Rooms, Studios and the impressive Suite 610 which benefits from panoramic views of the city.
In addition to a luxurious night’s stay, South Place Hotel is a gastronomic adventure with the Michelin-starred, Angler restaurant serving some of the finest seafood from across the British Isles, whilst Angler rooftop terrace is one of the most popular spots for al fresco eating and drinking in London. On the ground floor of the hotel, the laid-back 3 South Place is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with all seasonal menus overseen by Executive Chef, Tony Fleming.
Since opening, the hotel has continued to go from strength-to-strength, gaining a regular intake of new and repeat guests. Tina commented:
“The feedback for South Place Hotel has been fantastic. In the grand scheme of things, South Place Hotel is a small scale hotel but it has been really well received. On weekends the hotel holds lots of interesting events and really taps into the idea of ‘cool London’.”
