THE PIG, a quirky hotel and restaurant brand, is set to open THE PIG-near Bath in March 2014. The PIG’s newest venture will boast 29 bedrooms, a feature restaurant, large meeting room and treatment spaces all situated in an impressive Georgian property.
THE PIG brand operates two hotels thus far; the debut THE PIG was launched in the New Forest in 2011, and was followed in October 2012 by THE PIG-in the wall in Southampton. THE PIG-near Bath will open its doors in March, while summer 2014 will see the opening of THE PIG-on the Beach which will be located above Studland Bay in Dorset.
THE PIG-near Bath is nestled on a beautiful 20 acre site in the Mendip Hills. Chief Executive of Home Grown Hotels, parent company of THE PIG, Robin Hutson said:
“We have had our eyes on this area for a while and the location just seven miles from Bath and 12 miles from Bristol is fantastic for us. It is far enough away from the existing Pigs not to be in competition and has great demographics. The area has always been renowned for great country house hotels – we are really looking forward to reviving this property and making it an integral part of the local scene again.”
The development is progressing well so far with the on site team having renewed the mechanical and electrical systems, redecorated throughout, renovated the kitchen garden, as well as having converted the garden buildings into guest accommodation. There are just a few finishing touches to the interiors left to do and then the project will be fully completed.
The £9 million project has been undertaken by main contractor Link, PWP Architects and Paul Collins acting as the structural consultant. Associate architect with PWP who worked on the development said:“I worked closely with Robin Hutson from the onset, viewing the property and working up very preliminary sketch proposals for the potential of the site before this Grade II Listed Manor house was purchased by Home Grown Hotels.
“We were commissioned to prepare the detailed Planning and Listed Building Applications for Local Authority Approval. Hunstrete House is a special property that had been overtaken by the market in recent years and required a high level of investment and commitment to bring it back to its former glory.
“The proposals for the alterations were to provide the facilities the hotel required, whilst improving the quality and setting of the Listed Building for many years to come. Apart from the main house there were a number of buildings on the site that were not being utilised to their full potential, and with some creative design we have given the hotel some very unique rooms and suites.
“One of the main successes of a project such as this is that all the professionals involved work collaboratively as a team, everyone is aware of the goals that need to be achieved and that’s what we stick to.”
All of THE PIG-near bath’s interiors were undertaken by designers Judy Hutson. Upon completion the rooms will echo the shabby chic style that has become synonymous with THE PIG. The bedrooms will feature assorted furnishings, huge beds, oversized showers, as well as ‘larders’ stocked with snacks and drinks and espresso machines. The home-grown theme continues into the gardens where informal areas have been created allowing guest to relax and savour some al fresco dining courtesy of the wood fired oven.
The PIG-near Bath also features its own signature restaurant which will be serving up seasonal and simple British garden food. THE PIG is a fast growing hotel and restaurant group and is the brainchild of celebrated hotelier Robin Hutson of Hotel du Vin fame. Hutson wanted to create something that was the antithesis of the stuffy country hotel, with an emphasis on shabby chic décor, home grown food and exemplary service, a place where guests would immediately feel at home.
