Piran Meadows Resort & Spa

The redevelopment of a former caravanning, tenting and touring park is well underway and will see Summer Lodge Holiday Park transformed into Piran Meadows Resort & Spa.

The site is the newest park to be launched by Darwin Holiday & Leisure Resorts, who aim to transform the site and provide a premium holiday destination, which will be open year round for luxury lodge and caravan holidays.

The site is undergoing a complete redevelopment whereby all of the 75 tenting and touring pitches will be removed, 131 new static caravan and lodge pitches will be added and 50 existing static caravan and lodge pitches will be refurbished. In addition, a new central facilities building will be constructed comprising state of the art leisure facilities for guests.

The construction of the new leisure facilities are being undertaken by Phelans Construction Limited and NBDA Architects, who specialise in cinemas and holiday resorts, as well as health clubs; racecourses; restaurants; bars; offices and retail units. NBDA designed the building which, upon completion, will include a swimming pool, treatment rooms, bar and restaurant.

Works began on the redevelopment of the park in September 2013 and the construction of the site’s new leisure facilities began in October. Both are expected to complete by July this year in time for the 2014 summer season.

Bratherton Park Design Consultants undertook the redevelopment of the actual park and project managed the development, working alongside contractor Karl Watson Contracting. The site spans 11 hectares and the caravan site covers 10 hectares of this and so the park redevelopment was a vast undertaking.

Bratherton’s have extensive experience in these kinds of redevelopments, having worked for Haven and Bourne Leisure in the past. Bratherton’s were briefed by Darwin to create the best in class park in the area.

In order to achieve the best product, an array of works were undertaken. These included a complete strip of the site, whilst retaining existing trees, and the installation of new caravan and lodge bases. The team also installed new roads, drainage, electric, gas, TV facilities and Wi-Fi points. The landscaping of the site has also been undertaken and the sourcing of brand new luxury caravans has been paramount.

Bratherton’s also undertook all the finishing works around the lodges and caravans, such as the decks and hot tubs. Managing Director of the firm, John Bratherton, said:

“It’s unusual to see a park fully redeveloped, it was a blank canvas and we were able to put our best designs into it.”

The £7.5 million project will see the previously tired site and dated facilities transformed and the site refreshed. The project has run relatively smoothly so far, despite significant difficulties which were encountered due to the bad weather early in the year creating problems with the ground conditions.
