The Lion Hotel is a four star hotel situated in the Welsh town and World Heritage site of Blaenavon.
The hotel opened its doors in May 2014, following an extensive renovation which has provided the hotel with en-suite rooms and fantastic leisure facilities.
Mixing contemporary chic with sophistication, the Lion Hotel is Blaenavon’s only hotel and as such is a popular destination for visitors to South East Wales. The hotel includes 12 bedrooms, a restaurant and a wellness suite and provides guests with all the comforts of home in a beautiful and luxurious setting.
The restaurant serves food throughout the day, from breakfast to evening meals, with dishes including 31 day aged 8oz Welsh black rib eye steak, with mushrooms, baby leaves and triple cooked chips or shepherd’s pie with buttered greens. The menu is likely to change, based on the seasons and the availability of local ingredients, but is always backed up by a selection of regular specials.
In addition to all the fantastic new facilities, the hotel is also capable of catering for weddings and can offer full packages for up to 70 guests.
P&P Building and Roofing Contractors Ltd bought the hotel in 2008 with a view to updating and improving the offering. Working with architect Roger Field, the construction and civil engineering specialists reworked the building, doubling the amount of rooms at the hotel, before adding a health suite, sauna and steam room.
P&P Building and Roofing Contractors, Company Owner, Paul Jones, said:
“We bought the building in 2008, just before the recession hit so we put a hold on things for a little while until the economy started to pick up. Over the next couple of years we sourced some funding and then took the project forward. We opened in May with an official open day attended by all the local councillors and so far the feedback has been great.”
Work ran fairly smoothly on the project, with the only real challenge centring on a main foul sewage pipe which ran through the basement. It took P&P Building and Roofing Contractors approximately 12 months to obtain an easement agreement from the local authority to remove the pipe, however, the team worked around the obstacle as best as possible so as not to slow down the project’s progress.
As the hotel is located within a World Heritage Site all external works were implemented in order to remain in keeping with the building’s surroundings. Materials used included a mix of natural slate, cast iron and smooth render.
Paul is understandably pleased with the finished result and is extremely proud to have the Lion Hotel open and taking bookings.
“It is great to see the Lion Hotel open now. The hotel is a place where locals or those from further afield can come for a break, eat in our restaurant and really enjoy this beautiful location.”
