A £5.9 million project to expand teaching facilities at Thorpe Hall Primary School in Walthamstow continues to make great progress.
The project is being delivered in three phases with work currently taking place on the third and final phase.
Phase One of the project comprised the construction of a brand new multi-purpose hall, along with a new kitchen for preparing school meals and the installation of storage facilities. Phase Two of the project included the construction of a new 12-classroom teaching block, along with a staffroom, a library, a number of group rooms and associated support spaces.
Work began on the school expansion project in June 2013 with Phase One of the project reaching completion in April and Phase Two completing in July.
Phase Three of the project is currently underway and is scheduled for completion in October 2014. Work on Phase Three includes the demolition of existing dilapidated accommodation, the removal of asbestos and the installation of some hard and soft associated landscaping.
Wates Construction Ltd is the main contractor on the project, whilst NPS London (John Drewery) and Wates Construction Ltd is providing architectural services via a two-stage tender process.
The project is being implemented by the London Borough of Waltham Forest and will see the new buildings replace what was previously a collection of poor modular accommodation. The new buildings have been constructed from traditional methods and include a steel frame, insulation, a coloured render finish and a sedum roof. During the works a new electrical substation was also installed.
The project has not been without its challenges as access to the site is restricted with the construction team only able to access the school from one entrance. In addition, the construction team has also had to work within close proximity to a railway line.
With work nearing completion on the project staff have been busy transferring resources to the new school building whilst pupils are enjoying the summer break ahead of the new term in September. Once work is complete on the project the new school building will achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Good’.
Speaking to Premier Construction about the works, Project Manager David Asquith, said:
“Works have progressed very well. The project is important as it will provide the school with the resources to meet the demand for primary places at what is a popular local school. In addition, the new facilities will provide the local community with additional pupil places, as well as a school hall that can be used by local community clubs and groups.”
Located on Hale End Road in Walthamstow, Thorpe Hall Primary School provides education for children from nursery through to Year 6. Thorpe Hall Primary School is a busy and friendly school and has been providing education since 1935.
The school was once home to famous Tudor playwright George Gascoigne and his wife Elizabeth Breton and takes its name from the village in Yorkshire where Elizabeth came from. In 2010 the school celebrated its 75th anniversary with former pupils providing the school with old photos which were uploaded to its website.
