Located on Ayr Road, Shawsburn, Larkhall, Radstone Hotel has recently undertaken a refurbishment and rebrand, designed to update facilities and present a new identity.
The main contractor that successfully finalised developments was Rad Ltd, who delivered the project alongside an experienced and professional workforce.
Leading design consultants Elevation Architectural Design and 10 Design Ltd both worked on the design aspects of the building. The plush hotel – formerly Shawlands Park Hotel – was unveiled to the public in July 2014. The stunning hotel is set out with green lawns surrounding it, giving the exterior a vibrant fresh feel.
Discussing the project, Director Chris Benn of Leading Design Consultants, Elevation Architectural Design said:
“RAD Ltd acted as both client and main contractor for the project, approaching us to undertake the design work and we were delighted to be given the opportunity. We used contemporary design to reinforce the unique individual appearance of RAD hotels – almost a type of branding of the architecture.”
The project began on site in January 2014. Formerly the hotel was fairly small in size, however over the decades there was a catalogue of diverse styles that the hotel had undergone including a mish-mash of levels where the original building had almost been consumed by the frequent added extensions.
From the exterior of the building the most noticeable change is the departure from the range of numerous levels and styles of architecture to a sleek and modern form. The site has been completely re-branded; however stepping inside the original entrance still remains but the reception has now moved location.
The feature fireplace is elevated to enable to it be seen and to add to the feeling of warmth. Bespoke feature wallcoverings, lighting and artwork were commissioned along with a concealed cocktail bar in the private dining room to cater for private parties or mixology exhibitions. Further to this, the toilets were fitted with custom made, single piece, thermo-formed vanities. All of which helps to complete the slick look of The Opal.
“The project was very important to us, highlighting our involvement in hospitality and also the construction side of things. We are a young and quickly growing architectural practice in Scotland and it has given us an opportunity to show what we can provide our clients with, in regard to renovation and creativity. It has been a very important and also exciting development for us and we know this building reflects our values and passion as a design practice.”
Speaking to Premier Hospitality Magazine regarding the interior design, 10 Design Ltd Company Director, Simon Andrade, said:
“Radstone features ‘The Opal’, a contemporary Bar, Restaurant & Lounge with glass panels framing the sensational views of the Clyde valley and surrounding landscape. The centrepiece bar with integrated & elevated televisions, and open backfitting, provides a focal that doesn’t split or divide the space. Booth seating provides a cosy & private dining experience, lounge seating provides a comfortable place to sit with a coffee, and all with a vibrant colour scheme giving an energetic atmosphere.
“Our clients, Rad Ltd are a pleasure to work with and the whole design evolved and developed into something special.”
An Opal A La Carte menu is available with a Daily Specials menu on offer 12-6pm daily.
There is also an option for private dining, whereby guests can choose a menu from the chef’s selection or even create their own. Packages for large groups of guests are available including refreshments, hot drinks, canapés and petit fours. The Foyer Bar also offers tea and coffee, a deli selection and light bites for guests.
Wired Ltd specialises in the production of high end lighting and has an impressive portfolio having worked alongside a plethora of high profile clients. Most recently the firm supplied Italian high end lighting to 10 Design to feature in the Shawlands Park Hotel project.
The firm supplied an array of bespoke wall panels to the project ranging from 30 centimetres in size to a whopping two metres. Wired are experts at crafting bespoke lighting products in term of both design and light output and so were pleased with the end, flexible product supplied on this project.
We caught up with Maureen Mckerrall, from Wired Ltd, to find out what it means to work on this project. She told us:
“It is great for us to deal with 10 Design as they take the time to enquire about the light output and maintenance of each individual light. Other designers tend to only look at a product aesthetically whereas this firm look to us for advice which is great.
“It is a pleasure dealing with them and being involved on a project like this.”
