Shanty Town, Hounslow

The Shanty Town has opened in the Blenheim Centre, in Hounslow offering shoppers the ideal venue to enjoy a selection of the finest foods after a day of retail therapy.

The venue’s menu comprises a variety of freshly cooked, authentic dishes inspired by street food found in the shanty towns of Mexico, India, China, Italy, Japan and Turkey.

Premier Hospitality caught up with Akhil Junghare, Business Development Manager at The Shanty Town, to find out more about the project. He commented:

“The venue is located in between two large retail stores and was previously an Indian restaurant. It is now owned by Green Valley Private Limited who trade as Shanty Town selling global street food to shoppers in the area.

“Works began on site in November last year with the inspiration for the venue originating from the desire to represent each countries cuisine and their own street foods.”

Akhil, who works on the promotions and marketing side of things for Green Valley Private Limited, added:

“The venue is very close to the high street and as all the shops close at 8.00pm people don’t currently have a quality space to sit outside in. So we are giving them a space outside to enjoy until 10.30pm. Also we offer global food which isn’t around in the near areas as well as serving food from breakfast until dinner time and a great drinks option all for a flat price as well.”

ID Concepts acted as the main contractor and designer for the scheme offering a one stop shop service to the clients. The firm specialise in the design and build of restaurant, bars, clubs, boutiques and coffee shops and have been in operation for 16 years. Since their inception the firm have worked with a plethora of high profile clients undertaking projects such as John Frasier Jenkins Salon, Charlie Choyse Restaurant and Maseleda.

The firm have a 6000 square foot joinery workshop where they made many of the items, furniture, signage and specialist lights for the project. Toni Ghani, Design Director at ID Concepts, commented:

“It was important to be involved with this scheme as we were able to showcase what we can do. We were involved 100% from start to finish of the project.

“We pride ourselves on being able to work with clients from the very start. We are a very design led company and we take projects from concept to completion and seeing things all the way through makes things easier for the client.”

The 170 cover venue, which opened on the 21st February, comprises a colourful interior including an array of galvanised sheets, colourful wood work, wooden flooring and antique chairs made in 1948. A mezzanine floor has been fitted in the venue to be utilised as a sports bar, as well as additional dining space, with the owners planning to use it to host rugby fans in July this year.

Upon entering the venue diners will be greeted by the vibrant oranges, yellows and reds that illuminate the space as well as the main bar. Beside the bar an 11 metre long kitchen counter boasts a plethora of world street food for the diners to enjoy as well as space for up to 50 diners.

In front of the bar is a youthful, colourful dining area for up to 70 diners and outside the venue is a dining space for 50 people. A soft opening was undertaken on the 16th February with walk-in guests offered free food and wine tasting experiences before table bookings began from the 21st of the month.

Akhil said that there were a few challenges during the project with regards to the local residents as the venue is within a residential area. The team received numerous objections regarding the noise of the works and were aware that the residents did not want the venue to be opened until late in the evening. Despite the difficulties Green Valley Private Limited worked with the local council and residents to deal with the issues.
