Malmaison Newcastle

Malmaison Newcastle has undergone a refreshing refurbishment, taking the hotel’s bar, restaurant and bedrooms to a new level of luxury.

The refurbishment project was in progress from January through to March of this year, resulting in an entirely new look for the hotel bar and restaurant, newly decorated bedrooms and a lick of paint for the reception space.

Malmaison Newcastle is a 122 bedroom boutique hotel situated at Newcastle’s Quayside. The hotel spans seven floors, with the top floor exclusively home to the hotel’s ship yard inspired suites.

Encompassed within the old cooperative building, Malmaison Newcastle was the third in the now extensive list of Malmaison Hotels; following on from the Edinburgh and Glasgow residences. The cooperative building was redeveloped as a hotel 19 years ago and has since become a well-established venue for visitors to the city as well as those who live nearby.

Sales Manager at Malmaison Newcastle, Beth Gatherar told us:

“When selecting new Malmaison Hotels, we usually opt for listed buildings which are of interest to the location and turn them into fantastic luxury boutique hotels. With Malmaison Newcastle, we chose the old cooperative building which is one of many stunning pieces of architecture on the quayside.”

Refurbishment works began at Malmaison Newcastle in January starting with a redesign of the bar and brassiere.

Beth said:

“We redeveloped the bar and brassiere in time for Valentine’s Day because we knew it would be important for us to be open for valentines dining and drinks. We’re competing against a lot of cool bars in the city centre so we wanted to re-open with a brand new look, a new menu and a new vibe.

“Although we’re an established brand and an existing hotel which people know, we have been here in the same place for a long time and we we’re beginning to look a little bit old and tired. We gave the hotel a much needed new lease of life which keeps us in line with the big competitors.”

Following the redevelopment and new interiors of the bar and brassiere, Malmaison Newcastle reopened the eatery as Chez Mal; placing both of the consumption areas under one roof.

The bar and brassiere is at the heart of the hotel, serving up a tempting array of British and French cuisine. Residents and visitors can enjoy a dish from the menu before stopping by the Mal Bar; where they serve handpicked craft beers, buckets of fizz and a famous list of Malchemy cocktails.

The Designers moved on to a refurbishment of the 122 two bedrooms, which begin at level two of the hotel. The bedrooms were worked on one floor at a time so that the hotel could remain in full operation throughout the process. These were completed by the end of March.

The hotel is home to 14 suites, all of which are situated on the seventh floor. The suites are named after famous ships which were constructed on the Tyne. The remaining bedrooms are all sizable, with the hotel admitting to there being space for more, but they opted for better quality, more spacious offerings. Beautiful bedrooms come as standard, but the hotel also offer rooms with a view of the Millennium Bridge and the breathtaking river and architecture.
