Locke & Remedy, Cardiff

What was once the grand old free library located in the centre of Cardiff has been transformed into the brand new Locke & Remedy.

Situated adjacent to the Cardiff Story Museum, Locke & Remedy has altered half of the grade ΙΙ listed Victorian-baroque building.

Offering a range of custom made “mixes and measures” premium cocktails, craft beers, real ales and an extensive wine list, the new restaurant bar is the place to be. The all-day restaurant serves a main menu with appetising, rustic options that include wood-fired pizzas and prime-meat burgers to feast on. Also open for breakfast and brunch, Locke & Remedy serves speciality coffee during the day.

With Concorde BGW creating the interior, the extensive refurbishment of the large, bright venue included stripping back decades of dull décor to reveal striking original architectural features. Acting as a new landmark, the building is very handy for shoppers and city nightlife, as well as those visiting Cardiff Castle and entertainment at St David’s Hall.

Entering the building, guests are greeted by a hallway clad in ornate tiles in vibrant colours, welcoming them into a high quality drinking and dining destination that boasts the day-to-night factor. The space is perfect for relaxing daytime drinks with friends, or after-work ‘remedies’ to wind down with, to late night and weekend celebrations.

The long sweeping bar allows for ample space to observe the competent bartenders shaking up their crafted classics and innovative creations, with a selection of beers are available from taps along the coppered wall. Guests can choose from comfy booth seating or intimate spaces, such as the raised area and a private room that still offers the buzz that the venue atmosphere boasts.

A double size Gozney stone hearth oven is a main feature on show, dual-fuelled by gas and hardwood, using compressed beech briquettes and heats to 450 degrees. The spectacular pizza oven is accompanied by the prized seats at the pizza bar, frequently occupied by those who wish to view the chefs at work.

Featuring high walls on arches, the space is given an airy feel reinforced with bright windows on three sides. Distressed wall finishes stand alongside geometric detailing, softened by floral accents and curvy glass bubble lights. Cool teal blues and glossy metro tiles are warmed by the addition of burgundies, tweedy textiles and characteristic wood. Apothecary jars and well-ordered storage receptacles also sit high on the walls for an eccentric touch, fitting in with the ‘remedy’ theme.

Available choices from the creative menu include delicious burgers made using the best minced chuck, brisket and dry aged flank, such as the Black and Gold burger with black pudding and double cheese. Pizzas on the menu include the tasty base topped with Parma ham, chorizo iberico, beef ragu, salami and pepperoni; and the marinated buffalo mozzarella and basil pizza, perfect for vegetarians.

Breakfast and brunch options include smashed avocado roll with sautéed mushrooms, roasted vine tomatoes, poached eggs on sourdough toast; short rib bubble and squeak with fried eggs; and soft boiled duck eggs with sourdough soldiers.
