Millennium Bailey’s Hotel – In the heart of South Kensington
Presenting sophistication and style, the Millennium Bailey’s Hotel is located in affluent Kensington, enveloped in authentic Victorian décor and sweeping staircases. Recently refurbished into something spectacular, guests staying at this historical hotel can enjoy a luxurious and memorable stay.
A full bedroom refurbishment was conducted across the board by ADS Design & Brand Development Ltd, as well as a sparkle refurbishment to the public areas – and the front entrance is currently under planning permission to be renovated.
Premier Hospitality spoke to Sarah Sharman, Interior Designer at ADS Design & Brand Development Ltd, who said:
“The Millennium Bailey’s Hotel was a prestigious hotel back in its day, so there is a wealth of history surrounding the hotel. We finalised the design of five floors of bedrooms, as well as a sixth floor in the loft containing two penthouse suites – named The Baileys Suite and the Walworth Suite. Overall there are 210 bedrooms in the hotel including the two penthouse suites and 11 Junior Suites.
“We started work on the fifth and sixth floors in January last year; the completion date for the bedrooms was 30th October – however the developments are still ongoing to complete the entrance which is awaiting planning permission. We intend to update the signage, as well as the floor tiling and planting at the front to recreate the quintessential “Kensington” curb appeal.
“In the bedrooms, we fitted carpet, completed a full redecoration and added feature wallpaper to the headboard walls – and in terms of the fabrics, we used contract standard fabrics with a traditionally British woollen texture on cushions and bed throws. Chairs and headboards display elegant faux leather, and we maintained a fairly neutral palette to keep the main focus on the artwork and original features and quirks of the hotel. We also completed a full refurbishment of all bathrooms to provide a new bright, clean and spacious experience.”
Interestingly, each individual floor has its own dedicated theme – except two floors which share the theme ‘Kensington & the Great Exhibition’. The other themed floors are Henley & the Thames, City Gent and Kew Gardens; ADS Design tailored the colour, finishes and artwork to reflect the individual theme for each floor.
With the Kew Gardens themed floor for example, ADS Design incorporated palettes of green and floral wallpapers to emanate the beautiful gardens – whereas the City Gent features bold stripes on the wallpaper to echo the stripes of the notorious pinstripe suit, and more masculine colours such as burnt orange. A cluster of artwork tells a story of the theme to each floor, adding to the journey that guests can undergo as they visit the hotel.
Featuring in each room of the charming hotel is a picture of Sir James Bailey – the founder of the hotel and a British Conservative Party politician, who served from 1895 to 1906 as Member of Parliament for Walworth in South London. Little artefacts are also in place on the shelves such as miniature antique shoehorns in the City Gent rooms; and little teacups and saucers in the Kensington rooms.
“It was an important project to me personally – having worked in the industry for three years, I have dipped my toe in hotel refurbishment with responsibility of the odd sample room or business lounge – to be thrown in at the deep end with this refurbishment was challenging to say the least! To walk away from the hotel and look back knowing we have transformed the entire hotel is a great achievement. As a design practice we are confident that the hotel has been upgraded to accommodate the modern amenities of today, whilst retaining the undeniable charm of this historic hotel.”
