 Appleby Manor

A Cumbrian hotel is making its mark with its busiest three months in more than fifteen years.

Family-owned Appleby Manor opened the doors of its new £1million Garden Spa in the heart of the Eden Valley at the end of 2015. Offering the most comprehensive selection of day spa packages and treatments in the North West, the new facilities have helped visitor numbers at the hotel soar to an all-time high for January, February and March.

Appleby Manor Hotel & Garden Spa was built in 1871 for wealthy solicitor John Alcock Heelis and was orignally named Garbridge House. The building was converted into a hotel in the late 1940s and was renamed Appleby Manor Hotel around 1976.

Mike and Angela Dunbobbin have owned Appleby Manor since 2000 and have recently undertraken a refurbishment program that has resulted in the hotel being upgraded from AA Star to AA 4Star in October 2007. The Hotel is now seen as one of the finest Lake District hotels in Cumbria.

Surrounded by the inspiring mountains and fells of the Lake Distric, North Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales, Appleby Manor offers its guests a place to relax, sit back and enjoy real pleasures. With open log fires, a fine selection of wines and whiskies, together with an award winning resturant, excellent bedrooms and superb views over Eden Valley, Appleby Manor is the perfect location for exploring the Lake Distric National Park and the surrounding areas.

Appleby Manor Hotel & Garden Spa houses numerous facilities including 31 luxurious bedrooms and The Oak Room Resturant, which offers guests the chance to choose from a selection of imaginative and mouth watering individually priced dishes from the menu. The resturant is renowned for its high quality cooking, with skilled and dedicated kitchen staff on hand to offer plenty of disehes that will tempt the taste buds, making meals at the resturant truly memorable.

The latest major investment into the hotel has created 10 new jobs in the spa, with additional new recruits now also needed to cover the upturn in business at the main hotel.

Over the past three months, the hotel has seen a surge in local visitors from West Cumbria and the Lake District, as well as guests from further afield including Lancashire, Merseyside and the North East. There has also been a shift towards friends and family celebrating birthdays and special occasions with group getaways to the spa.

Owner Mike Dunbobbin said: “It’s been a difficult time for many people following the devastating floods, but we are really proud to be investing in Cumbria and helping put this special part of the world on the tourism map. We hope the positive economic benefits we are seeing will bring added benefits not just for our business, but also for Appleby and the county as a whole.

“Obviously we cannot rest on our laurels. The spa development is just phase one of a longer-term plan and we will be continuing to look to the future with the development of a roof top garden for the spa and newly refurbished bedrooms over the next couple of years.”

The Garden Spa’s extensive facilities include five treatment rooms, a steam room, pedidarium, salt inhalation room, manicure and pedicure room, sauna, a feature Rainsky & Monsoon shower and a luxurious infinity hydro pool linked to the outside by huge glass doors.
