Jan

Jan, a new middle eastern-style restaurant inspired by the Caspian flavours of Iran and Turkey will open in Clapham in July.

Located at 78 Northcote Road, the 53-cover site was founded by Faizan Iqbal and will be spread over three areas including a bar, mirrored ceiling dining area and heated outdoor eating space.

The main contractors on the development of Jan have been Momi Deco and the main architects have been I-AM Design.

Paul Tynan, Creative Director at I-AM Design commented: “I-AM have been involved with Jan from the very beginning. We initially joined the client team for a food safari and inspirational trip to Moscow where the original concept shifted from a traditional Uzbek restaurant to a much broader refined menu. Since then we have created the brand name, identity, characters and restaurant concept. We have joined the client team sampling the menu created by food consultants FIS and now as the project moves into the build we regularly attend site meetings and liaise with suppliers and build partners.”

Initial workshops for the project took place in November 2015 with the restaurant set to open in early July 2016.

Long tables will allow for big groups to dine and an open kitchen will showcase the charcoal oven and grill. The design will also incorporate tiles, wooden flooring and heavy gold wall frames.

Paul added:

“The principle of the design scheme can be summarised as ‘flamboyant elegance.’ We wanted the restaurant to be a little mysterious, to encourage curiosity and wonder, so we have created a series of unique characters, inspired by Caspian deity and warlords, which will feature as large format portraits within the bar and restaurant areas. The front area works as a café by day and restaurant by night so the mood of the space adapts throughout the day. The open grill and kitchen bring energy to the back area of the restaurant, delivering the ultimate banquette dining experience. The space combines the casual informality of Clapham with the opulence of Mayfair in perfect harmony.”

Dishes on the menu will centre around the charcoal oven with diners being able to choose from traditionally cooked bread, meat and vegetables with dishes including Slow Roast Shoulder in a Pomegranate Glaze served with Chickpeas and Caspian Spices, Caspian Spiced Roast Chicken – for two – served in a Cardamom and Rosemary Broth alongside Spiced Aubergine and Sea Bream with Harissa and Preserved Lemons, Charred Miso and Tahini-Spiced Cauliflower available.

The restaurant will also comprise of small plates and sides including Sticky Sumac Chicken Wings, Rare Beef Salad with Charred Leeks, Yoghurt and Garlic Dressing and Za’atar Fried Potatoes.

The bar’s cocktail menu will offer a variety of drinks including tea-infused cocktails with Middle Eastern spices and fruit such as pomegranate and lemon. All of the juices and syrups on offer will be made on-site with an original Jan beer, which was specially created for the restaurant by Brew by Numbers, also available.

The dining experience will also be complemented by a playlist built in-house and will offer diners a taste of old and new school classics.

Paul concluded: “We have really enjoyed the project. It is refreshing to have a client that wants to challenge convention, to some of the traditionally unchartered and often unobtainable and glamour of Central London to local neighbourhoods such as Clapham and beyond.”
