Epicurean – The new social hub for bustling Edinburgh

Epicurean

Creating a new social hub for the bustling city of Edinburgh is Epicurean, a stylish new bar located on the ground floor of the G&V Royal Mile Hotel on George IV Bridge.

Previously called simply Bar G&V, the ground-floor space has been transformed in a project designed by Graven Design, with Thomas Johnson as fit out contractors, who were praised for the high quality of their work.

Jim Hamilton, creative director of Graven Design said: “The venue opened in September and feedback from the client has been very good, with greatly increased trade in the new bar, which also has a new food offer.

“The original bar area was completely stripped out. The interior space faces east and due to its location within the building there is very little natural daylight internally in this area.

“We decided to accentuate this by creating a cosy, dark ‘hideaway’ space, away from the hustle and bustle of the Royal Mile.”

The interior includes a series of comfortable seating options including snugs and booths. The space is divided into three main interconnected areas – the first is the main bar with bar stool seating and a back bar featuring bronze mirrors with burnished brass panels. The bar itself has a charred timber panelled frontage and a white marble counter.

In the centre of the space is the lounge featuring curved and rectangular booths, and there is a snug to the rear.

Seating for the bar, booths and snug is in a mix of leather from different suppliers in a range of shades including deep red, grey and natural tan, contrasting with the table tops, which are in white marble.

Most of the walls are panelled in charred timber. The bar area features bespoke black and white mosaic flooring, with the remainder of the floor in wide plank dark oak. The wall at the entrance to the bar is in special glazing which allows a shadowy view of the hotel’s lobby area.

Lighting includes a series of bespoke LED lit glass pendants from Scandinavia.

Jim Hamilton said: “We were happy with the transformation of the space which was greatly assisted by the co-operation and hands-on approach of the hotel manager Martin Scott – and the main contractors did a brilliant job too.”

With an upbeat vibe creating an inviting and vibrant atmosphere for city dwellers and guests alike, Epicurean serves aromatic infusions and colourful cocktails using home grown flowers and herbs from the hotel’s EvoGro hydroponic.
