Portmarnock Hotel – Coastal Paradise

Portmarnock

Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links officially reopened in January 2017 after an extensive refurbishment under new owners Kennedy Wilson. Located along the idyllic ‘Velvet Strand’ of North County Dublin, the revamped hotel boasts 134 refreshed guest rooms, a state-of-the-art Spa, three standalone dining offerings and a world-class Links 18-hole golf course.

While previously the hotel took little inspiration from its stunning coastal setting, the new contemporary décor takes the opposite approach with cool and neutral tones reflecting the surrounding landscape and sea.

The Portmarnock Hotel has a rich history and was the original home to the Jameson Distillery dynasty. The original Jameson House, built in the early 1800s, remains part of the hotel structure today.

The refurbishment took place across an 18 month period and was coordinated by local interior designer Ciara Ni Laoi, founder of CLR Design. Speaking to Premier Hospitality about the project Ciara emphasised the importance of incorporating the spectacular backdrop into the new design:

“The hotel is situated in a unique spot, sitting on what is arguably the best beach in County Dublin. Previously the hotel didn’t reflect this in any way and had become a bit tired. Our brief was to rectify this and connect the hotel to the location.

“To help do this we introduced a soft colour scheme of blues and greys with punches of colour and contrasting textures. The carpets were designed to reflect the patterns on the beach. As you enter the lobby there is a lovely, big, high space that used to feel quite enclosed rather than bright and airy. We stripped it right back and then formed a light installation that looks like sea washed glass. At night, it sparkles and by day it’s a lovely blend of sea blues and greens. A lot of the elements we’ve introduced are bespoke.

“The bedrooms also reflect the seaside location with soft blues and greys. We added window seats to rooms so guests can sit right into, and take full advantage of, the stunning views. We commissioned original artwork so that each room has a unique element. It’s been a great project to be involved with and was a fantastic experience.”

One of the most exciting new additions to the property is the hotel’s stunning state-of-the-art Spa. Embracing the tranquillity and serenity of its natural surroundings, The Spa at Portmarnock is a haven of relaxation and indulgence.

Portmarnock

Food at The Portmarnock is spread across three distinct culinary options – The Seaview Restaurant, The 1780 Restaurant and the iconic Jameson Bar. Under the stewardship of new Executive Chef Tom Walsh, food is a mixture of casual and gourmet dining celebrating the array of fresh and seasonal ingredients available on the hotel’s doorstep.

The Seaview is the perfect place to relax with panoramic windows and views over Dublin Bay and Ireland’s Eye. At night The Seaview experience is a celebration of the sea offering guests an exclusive seafood-only menu. Conversely, The 1780 serves up a contemporary fine dining experience in a modern interior.

The iconic Jameson Bar – situated in the heart of the old Jameson House– features original oak panelling, high ceilings and original oil paintings from the Jameson era, creating a unique and unforgettable atmosphere.

The recent renovation has also included investment in the world-class Links golf course with upgraded machinery and the creation of new pathways to maximise the rugged terrain.
