Recognition for American retro extravaganza – Nelsons Diner

Inspired design and outstanding craftsmanship in the fit-out has won the new Nelson’s Diner at the Kennett Shopping Centre in Newbury a place on the Restaurant and Bar Design Awards shortlist, in the Best Fast Food or Casual Restaurant category.

Project designers were Prosper, with the fit-out being carried out by BMS Limited.

Linda Tait, director at Prosper said: “This was a low budget project, but one that was well executed within an originally empty shell single-storey space.

“Although we had a very tight budget, we did manage to stick to the concept and achieve the desired results.

“The concept was to create an authentic 1950s style American diner reflecting many details of that era and taking customers back on a subliminal road trip through time. The first thing seen on entering is an elliptical shaped canopied drive-in style diner, and a pink Cadillac incorporating seating for waiting customers. A drive-in cinema is located to the rear and an authentic American ’Airstream’ style camper van with rounded edges, incorporates further customer seating.”

Diner-style bright rustic pink and sage green coloured neon signage true to the 1950s era is also incorporated. The colour palette includes turquoise, reds, creams and blacks.

Again in keeping with the overall theme, the furnishings are in American diner style, and include tables and chairs, and a high stool area at the bar. Flooring is in a selection of retro-style vinyls and concrete, with the walls including chequerboard tiling and painted finishes.

Linda Tait said: “This was a really fun project to work on and we really enjoyed it. The main contractors did a fabulous job and were good to work with, paying great attention to detail to make sure that everything was perfect. Both the restaurant owner and the landlord, Bridehall, were also delighted with the result. This was a one-off project and not part of a chain, although the restaurant owner does have another venue. The landlord helped greatly in getting the project off the ground and worked well with the team – in fact if it wasn’t for the landlord, then the project simply wouldn’t have happened.”

The project was completed in December 2016.

The menu at Nelson’s Diner follows the same American 1950s theme, with dishes such as “Country” Eggs Benedict – two scrambled eggs over a biscuit topped with sausage gravy; thick Belgian waffle; banana nut waffle; chicken and waffle; buttermilk pancakes; banana nut pancakes; chocolate chip pancakes; thick French toast; cinnamon raisin French toast; omelette served with choice of hash browns, oatmeal, grits or tomato slices and toast or biscuit.

There’s also Country Fried Steak topped with sausage gravy, two eggs any style, choice of hash browns, grits or oatmeal and toast or biscuit – plus much more.
