Malthouse Kitchen

To service its ever increasing visitor numbers, Hook Norton Brewery has opened a new Malthouse Kitchen restaurant, which opened on Thursday 9 November.

Before the new development, it had been 118 years since the last bit of building expansion took place at Hook Norton Brewery when Alban Clarke oversaw the construction of the beloved tower brewery.

Located in the original Maltings building, which has been restored back to its original look with red brick walls, ironwork and wooden floors, The Malthouse Kitchen guests can enjoy a café style menu featuring freshly prepared local and traditional food over the breakfast and lunchtime periods.

Work on the new kitchen was undertaken by Midland Building Services who acted as Main Contractor. The company first tendered for the project in 2012 and then again in 2015 before starting on site in May 2017.

Commenting on working on the project, Director, Melvyn Riley from Midland Building Services said: “From a company point of view we have worked at the brewery for a number of years carrying out jobbing maintenance and smaller contracts. From a personal point of view, I have lived in the village of Hook Norton all my life so was pleased to be working on this iconic building.”

Sitting in its beautiful, mellow Cotswold Hills landscape, Hook Norton is a proudly independent and passionate family business that takes the very best of its handcrafted brewing heritage and combines it with a thoroughly modern approach to create a range of ales for today’s drinkers to enjoy. Hook Norton is one of only 32 family owned breweries and is the finest example of a Victorian Tower Brewery in the country. However, the brewery is about so much more than just its fantastic range of award winning beers. They welcome over 25,000 visitors a year to their Visitors Centre and 37 of their pubs are at the heart of many communities, serving great drink and food to the region.

The menu at Hook Norton Brewery offers small and large plates that can be shared as a group or enjoyed by themselves. Many of the dishes include Hook Norton’s award winning ale – e.g. Old Hooky Steak & Ale Pie, Buttered Toast and Hooky Gold marmalade.

A Christmas lunch menu will also be available and bookings are now being taken for a series of Christmas Party nights.

A full range of teas and hand ground coffee is available along with homemade cakes and pastries. There is also a bar serving the latest range of Hook Norton ales, from both the cask, keg and bottles alongside wines, spirits and soft drinks.

To walk off their breakfast or lunch, customers can visit the brewery museum, browse around the expanded brewery shop or pop round the stables and visit the shire horses.

James Clarke, Managing Director at Hook Norton Brewery said: “Interest in beer continues to grow, as does the appetite for knowledge and products with genuine provenance. The building had laid unused for many years and was in need of investment so rather than just repair the building, we decided to enhance our visitor’s experience. The new on-site facility allows us to offer more to our brewery tour visitors with beer and food matching a wider variety of dishes and a unique environment within which to enjoy it.”

The Malthouse Kitchen is open 7 days a week and is also available for private hire.
