Wine-lovers utopia opens – Wine House Hotel 1821


Representing a truly innovative hospitality concept, The Wine House Hotel 1821 is a haven for connoisseurs of fine wines, set in a historic multi-storey Georgian townhouse in Picardy Place, in the heart of Edinburgh.

The development of this lavish boutique hotel, which opened in October, was a collaboration between Italian wine producer ZONIN1821 and Scottish restaurateur Sep Marini. The Zonin family own nine Italian wine estates states, making them one of the foremost Italian wine producers.

Interior main contractors for the project to create the new venue were Costa Group.

The hotel includes a wine bar, cocktail bar, wine library, function space and guest rooms which take inspiration from the Zonin family’s key Italian estates, and feed off a grand winding staircase.

Guests can choose from four luxury five-star rooms, each with a unique, elegant design. Rooms include Masseria Altemura, Castello di Albola, Feudo Principi di Butera and Rocca di Montemassi – each boasting stunning views of the Edinburgh skyline and complete with complimentary welcome drink from the room’s named estate. Features include: high speed Wi-Fi, 48in flat screen TV and stunning en-suite bathrooms.

Many features of the hotel have been designed by the world renowned architecture practice, Claudio Silvestrin Architects, to create a familial yet stylish space that exudes charm. Red marble from Verona, sleek lines and a warm wood elegantly combine in the Wine Library which, like the concept of a book club, offers the perfect place for guests to meet other wine enthusiasts and experience the Cru wines of ZONIN1821’s Estates offered by the glass.

Claudio Silvestrin said: “Although wine is ancient, it still lives with us today: whether we are at the table or in the library, alone or with friends.
It’s this value that I wanted to reflect in the Zonin Wine Library, an interior architecture that, like wine, is natural, warm, ancient and timeless.”

The hotel is geared to educating and exciting both the wine novice and true connoisseur, with the aim being to bridge the gap between the producer and the consumer by bringing the vineyard to the glass and the winemakers to the table.

The Zonin Family love to share their passion for wine and The Wine House Hotel 1821, offers a plethora of interactive wine events from themed tastings to Sommelier lunches. Events will explore a variety of themes such as food pairings and grape varietals and are led by both visiting wine makers and in-house sommelier, Ladis Basta. Events are tailored to suit all capabilities and are created with the intention of allowing participants to discover new wines and enrich their knowledge of the wine world.

The hotel offers a comprehensive drinks menu ideal for both those wanting to try their first Chianti and for the sommelier wanting to seek out new labels. The menu pays tribute to the Zonin Family’s rich Italian heritage with its iconic selection of Italian wines and also uncorks worldly wine secrets by including a selection of wines from the finest global terroirs.

Sep Marini also brings a wealth of gastronomic and hospitality experience to the venture, having established some of Scotland’s most iconic Italian restaurants. The Wine House Hotel’s eating concept focuses on elegant yet family-oriented Italian cuisine.

Based in Italy, CostaGroup is a shop fitting specialist, operating across the hospitality and leisure sector. CostaGroup was established in the Ligurian hinterland in the late 1970s from a Franco Costa idea and at its peak performance CostaGroup has designed and produced almost one store per day.

Commenting on the project, Franco Costa, CostaGroup, said:

“This project gave us the opportunity to cooperate with the renowned architect Claudio Silvestrin, who has always been setting the rules of the design world, with original creations that dictate style trends and always keeping an up-do-date aesthetic line. His capacity to look at the essential nature of things allowed us to create a wine bar where natural oak wood, marble and leather are perfectly combined, creating a natural atmosphere which is never perceived as a superposition, but rather as a container made to exalt the wines from Zonin 1821 winery. Two natural stone sculptures, used as containers, embellish the environment and enhance the bottles, turning them into real jewels.

“Downstairs, the Cocktail Bar has a nightlife connotation, with a lounge area. The environment has darker colours, lighting is soft and it is characterised by a skilful use of backlit onyx. The lounge area interior design was entrusted to Arch. Federico Nassetti and Fabrizio Cellini Architects, and it was fitted by CostaGroup.”

Franco added:

“Being involved in The Wine House Hotel 1821 project was a privilege for us. It presented us with the opportunity to maintain relationship continuity with the investor, for whom we have already developed several formats such as Tony Macaroni and Mozza.”
