St George’s Urban Village – Birmingham’s largest ever residential development
Birmingham’s largest ever residential development, St George’s Urban Village sees the construction of spacious prime new homes, including houses and apartments, in Birmingham’s celebrated Jewellery Quarter.
The project is being carried out for Seven Capital by Birmingham-based contractor, Colmore Tang Construction.
For more than 250 years, the Jewellery Quarter has been famed worldwide as the UK’s centre for jewellery and is home to over 500 jewellery businesses.
This strong artisan heritage, coupled with its status as a designated conservation area with over 200 listed buildings, underpins its current growth and success as a thriving and creative hub. It is an inspirational place, celebrated for its creativity and is described by English Heritage as ‘a unique historic environment in England’.
St George’s Urban Village is designed in the unique visual style of the location, in keeping with the Jewellery Quarter Conservation Area vision.
Kevin McCann, senior project manager for the development said: “The scheme is proving hugely popular with buyers, with the development’s apartments on the Kettleworks site completely sold out and further properties selling all the time.
“These housing developments are highly popular because they offer very good value to buyers, due to their high quality specification. For example, properties on this development feature tiled and laminate flooring and fully fitted kitchens complete with integrated quality appliances.”
The construction team is currently working on seven five-storey apartment buildings – two of which are at fit out stage, as well as three blocks of three-storey townhouses which will be situated on an extension of Tenby Street.
Each of the apartment buildings has a car parking area, cycle shelters and bin stores, and one block will have a reception area and concierge.
One of the buildings includes an extensive play area for children and undercrofts providing vehicle access into the courtyards are also being provided to some of the blocks.
In addition, the works include the installation of two electrical substations, as well as the installation of storm attenuation tanks. Further works include internal and external landscaping around the blocks, together with the provision of walkways.
The apartment buildings are structured around a steel frame with blockwork and brickwork lower floors and timber flooring on the upper levels. Inner walls are in Kingspan and Metsec and outer walls are in brickwork. Sound insulation is provided via the installation of an acoustic membrane, with every apartment having an acoustic test. Quality construction is checked and ensured at every stage.
Kevin McCann said: “A key challenge of the project is the tight site which is fully occupied by the footprint of the buildings. It’s much like building a ship in a bottle, with site movements having to be carefully co-ordinated between the teams working on different blocks and site deliveries being scheduled in a timely manner.
“Colmore Tang is a very good company to work for with a very supportive management, and this is a highly interesting project to be involved in. Despite the daily challenges, this is a very happy site to work on, with daily progress meetings being held to make sure that everyone has everything they need to make good progress.”

Adam Sherwin, Managing Director of A.B.S. We have since won further contracts with Colmore Tang and hope this relationship can continue, as their attitude to subcontractors is the best I’ve witnessed in the past 20 years.”
The project is due to be completed by the end of November 2018 and is currently making good progress at the half way stage.
