Brook House

The redevelopment of a previously hidden plot of land in Cardiff is one of six projects shortlisted for this year’s RSAW Welsh Architecture Awards.

Brook House is a 4-bedroom new build detached house created by Downs Merrifield Architects. Work to create the two storey family home began in February 2017 and was completed later in the year. Construction on the 215m2 building was carried out by Advanced House Systems Ltd.

The bold design includes a timeframe clad with stone slips and Equitone cladding panels. The high environmental standard of the building is a particular highlight. Measures include passive slab foundations, a highly glazed south façade and high airtightness. The biggest challenge on the project proved to be ensuring the house and windows fitted in to the tight 300x300mm grid used for the cladding, therefore ensuring the elevations worked efficiently.

The contemporary design is unlike anything else nearby and the owners have received much positive feedback.

The six building shortlist for the RSAW Welsh Architecture Awards were chosen by a jury led by Wales Millennium Centre architect Jonathan Adams. All the shortlisted buildings are now being assessed by a regional jury before the winners are announced at a special ceremony on Thursday 31st May at Cornerstone in Cardiff.

The winners will then be in contention for a RIBA National (UK) Award, the first step on the way to the RIBA Stirling Prize.

The recognition from the RSAW is a fantastic achievement for Downs Merrifield Architects is a validation of the hard work and dedication that was put into the project. It is the first time the practice has been nominated for a RSAW Award. Based in Cardiff, Downs Merrifield was formed in 2014 and works primarily in the high end residential and hotel sectors.
