This Month in Premier Construction 25.9

Welcome to the latest edition of Premier Construction.

In this month’s issue we take a look at the University of Bangor; we check out two new RNLI lifeboat stations in Selsey and Llandudno; and we take a look at V&A Dundee, Scotland’s first design museum.

Grimshaw’s design for the Bangor University Arts and Innovation Centre unites the university and the city of Bangor in a landmark scheme that centres on the unique identity of the city, whilst complementing the University’s heritage environment. Known as Pontio, the Welsh verb meaning ‘to bridge,’ the centre physically bridges the university’s upper and lower campuses via a stepped arrangement of public terraces that connect and flow into an ‘internal street.

Lifeboat volunteers have been saving lives in Selsey, West Sussex, for over 150 years. In 2017, a new chapter for the RNLI in Selsey began following the opening of a state-of-the-art facility. The two-storey building, designed by Studio Four Architects and constructed by Reside Construction, comprises 2 boathouses and a crew facility block.

Located on Llandudno’s iconic exposed storm beach, to the east of the town’s famous Victorian promenade, is a brand new RNLI lifeboat station. Feasibility studies for the project were first carried out in 2011 but it wasn’t until spring 2016 that construction began. The station was completed in summer 2017 and represents the culmination of two decades of efforts by the RNLI to modernise the search and rescue capability of Llandudno.

And finally, an international centre of design, V&A Dundee presents the brilliance of Scottish creativity and the best of design from around the world. The first ever dedicated design museum in Scotland and the only other V&A museum anywhere in the world outside London, V&A Dundee will provide a place of inspiration, discovery and learning through its mission to enrich lives through design. For the first time and in one place, V&A Dundee will explore Scotland’s design heritage – its past, present and future. With all this and more, join us as we explore the impressive construction projects that continue to shape our landscape. V&A Dundee has been designed by renowned award-winning Japanese architects Kengo Kuma & Associates following an international competition and is Kuma’s first building in the UK.
