The Morgan Hotel

The Morgan Hotel on Fleet Street, Dublin has reopened following a €15 million refurbishment. The refurbishment has included a full interior redesign and the addition of a fifth floor. The newly refurbished hotel has added 39 bedrooms to bring the total to 168 rooms as well as the creation of a new lobby lounge and restaurant.

Owned by MHL Hotel Collection, work on the hotel’s refurbishment was undertaken by NODA and began in June 2017. The whole refurbishment is due to be complete in October 2018.

Speaking to Premier Hospitality magazine, Amelie d’Anjou from NODA said: “For the bedroom refurbishment, there was a three pronged approach on how to refurbish and upgrade the existing rooms. Some of the rooms that hadn’t been touched for 10 years required a more extensive refurbishment, some of the rooms had had some redecoration over the last 5 years and only required a soft refurbishment, and new bedrooms required a completely new design. All three of these refurbishment types required cohesive design elements that would cross over between all the different room types.

“The public areas entailed respecting the existing functions of the space that worked well, while combining it with the new sophisticated rebranding. The client wanted to be able to have a completely separate bar and dining experience from the hotel during certain days of the week. We designed distinctive spaces that were able to function both as an extension of the hotel as well as independent bar/lounge spaces. This is why you see a difference in design style between the public areas and the bedrooms.”

The hotel’s new design has been inspired by the vibrant Art Deco period with design highlights including a stone tile floor, bronze mirrors throughout, Tom Dixon table lamps and a bespoke lit mirrored ceiling. NODA wanted to design a space that would remain sophisticated and timeless, while allowing it to feel fresh and modern. To achieve this they incorporated a lot of classic design elements and finishes you would find in the likes of New York, which is why there is a nod to the Art Deco elements of the famous city.

Amelie added: “We believe the feedback has been very positive. We had reports from the hotel staff that a long term guest from New York had relocated to the Morgan Hotel after staying at a nearby hotel as it reminded him of home.

“All of our projects are important to us, but due to the nature of refurbishing an existing building, it required very close attention to detail from the design team. Seeing our efforts realised in the end is always a rewarding experience.”
