The Cat & Fiddle Inn

Conveniently situated for several local tourist attractions, with beaches and Exeter City Centre only a few miles away, a warm welcome awaits guests with something for everyone at The Cat & Fiddle Inn. The Cat & Fiddle Inn offers a lounge bar and large dining restaurant, a main bar (with pool darts and skittles) and a children’s soft play area. The large outdoor playground and grass area is perfect for children to let off some stream and with two large patio areas; it’s the ideal way to enjoy the sunshine.

The pub has been transformed following a major internal and external refurbishment after the site was purchased by St Austell Brewery. Founded in 1851 by Cornishman Walter Hicks, today St Austell Brewery remains 100% independent and family owned with a thriving estate that spans the South West ranging from Bristol in the east to the Isles of Scilly in the west. St Austell Brewery is also the South West’s leading wholesale supplier to the licensed hospitality sector, delivering beers, lagers, ciders, wines, spirits and soft drinks to nearly 5,000 bars, restaurants, hotels, pubs and clubs in South West England.

Work at The Cat & Fiddle was undertaken by main contractors Devon Contractors Ltd and Design Management Partnership who acted as the architects, interior designers, project managers and quantity surveyors.

Premier Hospitality magazine spoke to Steve Peacock, Director at Design Management Partnership about the project.

Could you give us some details about some of the work that has been undertaken at The Cat & Fiddle Inn?

“We have tried to retain the traditional character of the pub whilst modernising it to improve the customer experience.

“The site has had new floor finishes throughout, new internal joinery/screens, new bars and back fittings, new internal finishes, decorations, fixtures and fittings and a full refurbishment of the toilets. There has also been new external signage and lighting and some new planting adjacent to the main entrance.”

What were the time frames on the project?

“The project started on 4 June 2018 and was handed over to the client on 23 July 2018. The site then opened to the public on 17th August 2018.”

Would you say there are any stand out features in the pub?

“I think the introduction of the visual kitchen and carvery adds a real focal point to the centre of the pub.”

Were there any difficulties or challenges with the project?

“Deliveries to the site were difficult at times as we had to access it via the A3052 which is an extremely busy road. We also couldn’t work on the site at night due to the close proximity of residential neighbours.”

What does it mean to you to see the project get underway and complete?

“Traditionally, The Cat & Fiddle has always been a busy family pub and restaurant but in recent years it has urgently needed a quality refurbishment to revitalise it once more.”
