Iconic Victorian landmark transformed – Majestic Hotel
One of Harrogate’s most iconic landmark hotels – formerly the Majestic Hotel – is undergoing a £15 m refurbishment to create the new DoubleTree by Hilton Harrogate.
Hilton has signed a franchise agreement with the Cairn Group to open the hotel at the end of 2019.
Work is underway on upgrading the stately Victorian hotel, which once complete, will include 170 refreshed modern guest rooms, fitness facilities, a spa and pool and state-of-the-art conference and events space for up to 500 delegates. These include six state-of-the-art boardrooms and nine conference and events suites.
The hotel will also receive a boost to its restaurant offerings, which will include a champagne bar and restaurant, lounge bar, terrace and private dining room.
Main contractors for the project are Infinity Construction; interior designers are Koncept ID.
Claire Long, interior designer at Koncept ID said: “Our brief was to create a classic contemporary interior scheme that compliments the abundance of original features in one of Harrogate’s most iconic hotels. This included a full refurbishment of the 170 existing guest bedrooms and conversion of 30 staff quarters into new luxury guest suites.”
The project also included the full refurbishment of all of the hotel’s public areas, including corridors, reception and lounge, four ballrooms, a conference room in which a new bar was installed, and the existing spa which now incorporates a new Zen garden.
Aneil Handa, director, Cairn Group, said: “We are excited to announce that the highly regarded DoubleTree by Hilton brand is coming to Harrogate. This partnership will enhance our iconic hotel’s current offering and we are very much looking forward to seeing the finished results.
“This conversion follows the successful transition of two of our Cairn Group hotels to the DoubleTree by Hilton brand – DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Newcastle International Airport and DoubleTree by Hilton Edinburgh – Queensferry Crossing, and represents an exciting opportunity for Harrogate and the Cairn Group.”
Patrick Fitzgibbon, senior vice president, development, EMEA, Hilton, said: “A Victorian landmark, this hotel is a fantastic addition to our DoubleTree by Hilton portfolio. The hotel has been a paragon of Harrogate hospitality for more than one hundred years and, following its renovation, will become the first choice for hotel accommodation in the upmarket spa town.”
The hotel is currently part of The Cairn Collection, a hand-picked portfolio of Cairn Group hotels. The Cairn Hotel Group is a family-owned business headquartered in Newcastle, with 50-years’ experience in the industry. The hotel will continue to be owned and operated by The Cairn Group and will create a number of new jobs at all levels.

“We’re a small, agile team that has low overheads and a passion for getting things right quickly,” says HRH Contracts owner, John-Paul Macrow.
“We’re all about delivering great products, efficiently, at a good price. We concentrate on ensuring our customers are 100% happy. We’re not a jack-of-all trades, so while we could supply other, non-furniture, elements to a project, we would rather put a client in touch with someone more suited to their needs.”
Family-run HRH supplied the Majestic Hotel with public area furniture & case goods, lounge and bedroom chairs, as well as restaurant furniture, including fixed seating and tables.
The company specialises in the source and supply of contract furniture, with a specific focus on chairs and tables. The company has been in operation for just 18 months, although founder John-Paul has more than seven years’ experience working in the contract furniture sector.
Past projects for HRH Contracts include DoubleTree Hilton Sheffield; The Impeccable Pig in Darlington; The White Hart Harrogate; Crowne Plaza in Blackfriars, London; and more recently, a scheme for Russell Sage Studios London.
John-Paul said: “The Majestic has been a significant project for us. We’ve worked with the Cairn Group for a while now, on other projects, so they have witnessed first-hand the quality of the products that we can deliver.
“Cairn trusts us to supply to one of their flagship hotels and this project demonstrates that we can do what we say we can do.
“We pride ourselves on being an upfront, honest company.
“We don’t manufacture products and we make this clear to our clients; instead we offer a reliable service and we supply at a price that is great for them.”
