Avon Gorge by Hotel du Vin
The latest addition to Hotel du Vin’s collection of boutique hotels opened its doors on 24 August 2018 as Avon Gorge by Hotel du Vin.
Offering some of Bristol’s best views of the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge and the Avon Gorge itself, the hotel has been fully transformed over the course of 12 months. It boasts 78 stylish bedrooms, a brand new restaurant concept and a brand-new meetings and events space. The building dates back to the 19th century when it was known as the Grand Clifton Spa and Hydropathic Institution.
Created by the awarding-winning Dexter Moren Associates, the bedrooms and suites offer guest the opportunity to wind down in luxury after a long day. A contemporary development of the traditional Hotel du Vin style, each room includes dark greys, teals and greens, with colourful accents, stylish furniture and quirky artwork. Luxurious roll top baths, large comfy beds and the finest Egyptian cotton come as standard. Earlier this year the bedroom design was shortlisted for a SBID International Design Award in the Hotel Bedroom & Suites Design category.
The restaurant has been developed specially for Avon Gorge by Hotel du Vin. The name, Goram & Vincent, is inspired by the local legend of two giants. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, the restaurant is a paradise for meat lover’s thanks to its coal fired grills, smoker and bespoke clay ovens.
The new-look hotel also now has three distinct spaces designed for meetings and events, each offering something slightly different. Brunel, the smallest, can seat up to 20 people for a boardroom meeting. It benefits from natural daylight, French balcony doors and retains many of the building’s original features.
Housed in the former Spa’s pump rooms under the hotel are Aquam Bibe 1 and 2. Many of the venue’s original features were uncovered during the renovation work and have been incorporated into the design of this space – beautiful tiled flooring, original Turkish bath doorways and amazing stained-glass windows. Exposed brick walls, contemporary chandeliers, and bespoke artwork finish the look, creating a light and airy space that can be arranged for dining, presentations or board room style meetings. Aquam Bibe 1 and 2 can also be joined to create an even bigger function space.
All three areas, merge contemporary modern design with the historic character of the building, and are designed to meet the needs of today’s businesses, from state of the art IT equipment, to an array of fresh and seasonal menus.

Furnotel designs, manufactures and installs fine quality hotel furniture, including bedroom casegoods and bespoke joinery for public areas. Having recently relocated to a larger manufacturing facility in the West Midlands, Furnotel is geographically well placed to service hotel clients across the UK with furniture manufactured in Britain by their team of expert cabinet makers.
Furnotel has been designing and making contract quality furniture for over a decade and within this time has established very strong strategic relationships with multi-sited operators of leading hotel brands, such as Kew Green Hotels for whom they have produced bedroom casegoods for over 3,000 Holiday Inn guest bedrooms in the last three years alone.
Furnotel has recently worked on the chic Seven Hotel, where the team helped transform a former care home into a stunning luxury boutique hotel in Southend-on-Sea. Furnotel worked alongside Tibbatts Abel to produce all bedroom casegoods and stunning bespoke joinery in the public areas including an impressive feature bar.
Furnotel has also produced stylish bespoke hotel bedroom casegoods for 75 of the newly refurbished boutique bedrooms at the Hotel Du Vin Avon Gorge Hotel in Bristol. For this project Hotel du Vin and the interior designer at Dexter Moren Associates specified sleek, dark, veneered casegoods which were installed on site by Furnotel’s experienced installation team.
Furnotel’s Group Managing Director, Lee Marvin, said:
“Furnotel were delighted to be chosen to work with Dexter Moren Associates and the project team at Hotel du Vin again on the refurbishment of this iconic landmark hotel in Bristol. Producing high-quality furniture for a charming hotel brand synonymous with luxury is our pleasure.”
“It is a matter of pride at Furnotel that only the highest quality furniture is produced. Simply looking great isn’t enough. Whether the project involves the supply of bedroom casegoods, architectural bespoke joinery or both, each item is manufactured using superior quality raw materials with a high level of technical craftsmanship and undergoes a stringent quality control process before it leaves the factory.”
