The Old Bank Hotel

The independently owned Old Bank Hotel, centrally located on Oxford’s famous High, is a breath-taking statement in design. The five star hotel has 43 luxury bedrooms, many with unrivalled views of the city’s most famous landmarks.

Throughout 2018, a number of improvements have been made to the hotel including the creation of a new rooftop bedroom and terrace, additional features added to the luxury suites and the refresh of the remaining bedrooms and public areas.

Work on the hotel’s transformation has been undertaken by G Dighton & Sons Builder alongside Interior Designer Sally Conran and owner Jeremy Mogford.

Speaking to Premier Hospitality magazine, Kevin Dighton from G Dighton & Sons said: “We have worked with the owner of the hotel on numerous projects and he approached us with this project and asked us to be involved.

“The client is one of our most important clients and his two hotels are number one and number two on TripAdvisor so it is nice to have that ongoing relationship with those types of buildings and companies.”

New Rooftop Bedroom

Seven years in the making and after overcoming a myriad of planning issues, the Old Bank Hotel has completed a very complicated project which welcomed its first guests from the start of September 2018. The timing of this significant development conveniently coincides with the 20th anniversary of the Old Bank hotel, which first opened in 1999.

It is hoped that this brand new luxury bedroom, with its own private terrace, will have one of the most exclusive and very best views in the world.

The quintessential iconic Oxford ‘dreaming spires’ view cannot be enjoyed anywhere else is the city with guests able to wake in the morning and whilst lying in bed, by simply pressing a button, the curtains will open and reveal a huge minimalistic picture window doors onto an exclusive terrace with an unparalleled, mesmerising view to truly die for. In front of guests eyes, close up, will be St Mary’s Church with its incredible steeple, All Souls College with its famous coat of arms, the Radcliffe Camera, the Sheldonian and Bodleian beyond along with a roof scape which includes most other Oxford Colleges, many spires and a unique view up and down the length of the High with it 75 listed buildings.

‘The Room with a View’ will be the height of luxury with the latest touch screen technology. The room itself is fully air conditioned, has underfloor heating, very generous wardrobes and separate storage for guests luggage. There is also a handmade Epoc Super King bed with floating bedside tables and generous wrap around seating to enjoy the view. There is a dining table and a bar/cocktail/coffee making station, electric blinds and blackout curtains. The room’s technology includes a 55” SONY OLED smart TV with SKY and a centrally controlled integrated music system and radio to connect to guests own playlists. The bedroom desk and spacious Carrara marble clad bathroom both boast a special view of Merton Tower at the rear. The bathroom has a serious rainfall shower, large enough for two, along with a twin vanity unit.

The combined space of the bedroom and terrace measures 58 square metres or 625 square feet.

The garden terrace features planting along with a dining table for four and after this summer, two sun loungers.

It is well known that art is one of the main ingredients of the Old Bank Hotel and Quod restaurant and Bar and this special bedroom features some very interesting British 20th Century pictures and includes a terrific Geoffrey Clark sculpture on the terrace.  Geoffrey Clark was a pioneer in a golden age of British sculpture and his fearless experimentation with new materials and processes saw him create works that epitomise the vibrancy of the post-war British art scene.

Kevin added: “With the Rooftop Room it is a completely new addition to the site so we have also had to add a link building on top of the medieval section of the old part of the hotel. When we handed the Rooftop Room over to the client, we received really positive and fantastic feedback. It is in a lovely location, with fantastic views.”

Rates for the experience of a lifetime start at £1,000 per night.

Bedroom Refresh

As part of the hotel’s continued refresh programme, the refurbishment has seen thirteen of the bedrooms; the lobby and residence Library receive a new updated look. Work is currently ongoing in the remaining bedrooms and public areas.

Kevin said: “Work on the bedrooms has included a complete strip out and upgrade of everything to give them a new look and feel.”

This work is taking place in small manageable stages completing at the end of 2018, adding a modern feel to all of the bedroom categories.

The Quod Restaurant

With its show stopping Onyx Bar and Stylish Italian terrace, Quod Restaurant forms the hub of the Old Bank Hotel. Formerly a banking hall, the space was transformed by owner Jeremy Mogford to become Oxford’s largest, busiest and most successful restaurant. A solid statement in elegant and contemporary design, Quod houses an eclectic collection of modern art by young British artists such as Sandra Blow, Craigie Aitchison and Damien Hirst.

The award-winning 43 bedroom Old Bank Hotel and the 35 bedroom Old Parsonage are owned by Jeremy Mogford, founder of the Browns Restaurant Group. They are the only two independently owned five star luxury hotels in Oxford. Centrally located, with complimentary parking and guest bicycles, a genuine culture of hospitality makes these hotels the best places to stay in the city.

Also, with the same company; Gees Restaurant, the parsonage Grill and Quod Restaurant and Bar make up some of Oxfords largest and most successful restaurants and bars, where locals and visitors meet for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea or dinner. All are open all day, every day.
