The Anthologist – An anthology of style

Just opened on St Peters Square, Manchester The Anthologist is a stylish new Drake and Morgan restaurant and bar designed by an award-winning practice.

Located on the ground floor of a new building, the interior design of the new venue was evolved between Fusion DNA and Gillian McLean, MD of Drake and Morgan.

Main Contractors were McGoff Construction, who were praised for their work on the scheme.

Sam Smith interior designer at Fusion DNA said: “Last year we went on an innovation trip to Mykonos to research various style elements which could be translated for the interior. This site is the second of Drake & Morgan’s brand rollout, with the first site being in Gresholm Street in The City of London. The aim of the brand is that each site should be of a unique design.”

The 160 cover interior is of an open plan design, with a bar and stainless steel theatre kitchen with dining counter on the right hand side of the rectangular space.

Customers enter the venue through a Crittall style metal and glass lobby straight into the bar and lounge. The lounge features sofas and armchairs and is separated from the main dining area by a full height glass and walnut screen and display shelving incorporating homewares and trailing plants.

Sam Smith said: “The overall palette for the interior includes concrete and oak tile feature floors and bespoke contemporary style walnut patterned cladding along the right hand wall, which runs the entire length of the bar and wraps around to meet the kitchen. The bar and kitchen counter fronts are both covered in bespoke patterned concrete encaustic hexagonal tiling – one with a grey pattern on a white background and the other with a white pattern on a grey background. Both the bar and kitchen counter tops are stone clad and the kitchen is clad in blackened mild steel.”

The main bar area has a bespoke timber and tiled floor, with parquet flooring in the restaurant area, which also incorporates fixed seating upholstered in vibrant lime green and turquoise. This is complemented by aged brass table lamps and black wire pendant lighting.

Feature pendants adorn the lounge, dining and bar areas, with those in the bar being in a bespoke chandelier style in copper.

The WCs feature candy striped wall tiling offset with concrete vanity units with individual basins and complemented by brass framed mirrors.

In addition to the main seating areas, the 60 cover outside terrace overlooking Peter Street and complete with loose seating, an abundance of planters, twinkle lights and signage, can also be accessed via a covered walkway leading from the street concourse.

Sam Smith concluded: “Challenges of the project included the need to co-ordinate with other building occupants, however the project ran smoothly.

“McGoff Construction did well on the project, and this is the fifth site they have worked on with us. The client was happy with the scheme and the venue is now doing really well.

“We have had an ongoing relationship with Drake and Morgan over the last 10 years and have designed all of their sites including The Refinery, which has sites in Manchester, Edinburgh and The City of London, with each design being bespoke.

“Two of our designs for this client won accolades in the Restaurant and Bar Design Awards in previous years, with a further three shortlisted in this year’s awards, including The Sipping Room, The Allegory and The Listing.”

The Anthologist menu includes flatbreads and sharing boards, salads, burgers, sandwiches and steaks. Mains also include beer-battered haddock and chips, with tartare sauce; grilled poussin with gremolata and watercress; sugar-brined salmon with radish, cucumber and pea shoot salad; roast cauliflower and pesto fettuccine; raisins, spinach and lemon fish pie; cheddar potato crust pearl barley risotto; Pecorino Roast lamb rump with mash, samphire, cherry tomato, shallot and currant salsa, and sea bass – as well as a selection of puddings and afternoon tea.
