Decorex Champagne Bar
Multi award-winning interior design practice Shalini Misra Ltd. has added another accolade to its collection following success at the 2018 Restaurant and Bar Design Awards. The studio’s Decorex Champagne Bar was named the ‘Best Bar in a Retail Space’.
The bar was created especially for Decorex International 2017, the UK’s leading design show and the only one of its kind in the UK for the luxury interiors market. Having been regular attendees at the event over a number of years, Shalini Misra Ltd. was keen to be a part of its long history.
The brief for the bar was to create something that reflected the celebratory nature of the 40th anniversary of the show. It had to be extravagant and colourful with rich vintage colour tones to reflect their special ruby anniversary edition. The Great Exhibition of 1851 was a major source of inspiration. Speaking to Premier Hospitality, Shalini Misra Ltd. Hannah Foden-Dixon, Senior Interior Designer, expanded on some of the design highlights:
“At either end of the bar is a full height digitally printed voile ‘drop’. At six metres tall it represents the glasshouse – a theatrical interpretation of the technical drawings and monochrome lithographs of the Crystal Palace at Sydenham. “A palace of very crystal”; the original building itself was a breath-taking, gigantic pre-fabricated building of iron and glass.
“Forming the focal point at the centre of the champagne bar, a stunning chandelier cascades a fountain of crystal from above. ‘Paradise Fountain’, the title of a new piece designed and themed around the Great Exhibition in London in 1851, is a chandelier of epic proportions at over two metres in diameter. Key themes incorporated into the design are new flame LED technology and traditional flame heated glass-blowing techniques.
“The chandelier is in the shape of a dripping fountain, a key focal point of the 1851 exhibition. Parrots, The Crystal Palace and the Victorian obsession with taxidermy are key themes in the design. ‘Paradise Fountain’ employs the skill of UK master wood carving to create three full sized parakeets which land to drink at the fountain.
“The choice of parakeets is relevant to the Victorian love of exotic birds, and to today’s parakeet invasion in the Crystal Palace area and now also in Hyde Park. The stories of their origin in the UK are legendary. Real ostrich feathers are substituted for lime wood carved versions and then gilded at the top of the chandelier. Swarovski crystals complete the dripping water illusion, via thousands of custom tinted crystal beads.”
Established in 1978, Decorex is firmly recognised among the international design community as the trusted resource for high-end interior designers, architects, specifiers, retailers and property developers.
Reflecting on the award, Hannah added:
“Winning this award makes our team even more appreciative of such great collaborations with Decorex and with our wonderful suppliers. It also inspires us to continue to pursue creativity and innovation in our future projects.”
