Award recognition for Bōkan
Set atop Accor’s flagship Novotel in Canary Wharf, with spectacular panoramic views across the entirety of the city, Bōkan has become one of London’s most exciting, high-dining and drinking destinations.
From launch Bōkan became an instant success, with great reviews and thousands of visitors keen to experience this high dining concept and jaw-dropping views for themselves. Bōkan London became one of the most photographed venues of 2017 and is set to continue to deliver a unique and memorable experience for locals and visitors for many years to come.
The site was recently recognised at the 2018 Restaurant & Bar Design Awards where brand design agency Mystery received the award for ‘Best Restaurant or Bar in a Hotel.’
Mystery partnered with Accor Hotels in 2015 and spent two years shaping and developing the Bōkan concept; from creative strategy, to naming and branding, interior design and food menu development, working closely with the Accor project team to bring this striking venue to life.
Bōkan, meaning beacon in Anglo-Saxon, was created as the dockside guiding light for artisanal food and drink and to service both the hotel’s guests and London’s adventurous, gastronomic explorers with a passion for intriguing, European-inspired drinks and dishes set to memorable views at scalable prices.
The 37th floor houses an intimate 65-cover restaurant, showcasing the best of British produce across a menu of European dishes, including locally-sourced charcuterie and cheeses, Rhug Estate Venison shepherd’s pie, slow-smoked Blythburgh Pork Belly and Aberdeen Angus steak.
Mystery’s brief was to build the framework for a premium casual food concept with innovative twists on classic European dishes – to provoke nostalgia and inspire a journey of discovery.
The unique Docklands-chic style is further owned through the use of clever, yet subtle details referencing industrial pulleys and an imposing monolithic Verdigris-aged metal staircase that connects all three floors of Bōkan and encases the iconic, feature charcuterie fridge, bread and olive oil display.
From floor 37 up to 39, the interior’s ‘dockland chic’ concept takes inspiration from London’s historic Docklands areas, with a unique and beguiling combination of industrial and luxury comfort.
Weathered metals, rustic timbers and polished concrete finishes are offset by warm lighting, cushioned lounge areas and vintage rugs, with carefully selected pieces of classic furniture to create a snug, refined and luxurious, experience within an industrial setting. With floor to ceiling glazing, London’s iconic skyline features as the backdrop to the experience.
The roof terrace on the 39th floor boasts the highest specialist gin bar in London, with comfortable leather lounging areas, outdoor daybeds and a DJ mezzanine – perfect for intimate gatherings, while admiring the striking views of London. It’s an easy going and informal hideaway, far from the buzz of the busy streets below.
“Bōkan was the perfect challenge for Mystery to showcase the talents of each member of the creative team,” said Creative Director, Janfranco Caro. “We produced a unique brand-centric experience, while demonstrating our ability to create a 360-degree premium casual dining experience at the highest level.”
