Overlooking Perranporth Beach from cliffs on the north coast of Cornwall, Summer House is a brand new venture from the family behind The Watering Hole – the UK’s only bar on the beach. Summer House opened at the beginning of July but was generating significant buzz in the local area months beforehand.
The one storey venue has space for approximately 60 internal covers and serves high quality dishes created using the best possible locally sourced ingredients. Much like the food, the restaurant’s design is also a reflection of the local area and is attractive to both residents and tourists. There is also a terrace seating up to 80 people boasting stunning views across the beach.
The design of Summer House was led by Absolute. Zella Packer, Interior Designer at Absolute, said:
“Throughout the restaurant Absolute proposed to keep a palette of neutral tones and natural materials, this subtle combination complements the surrounding location and allowed us to create features with accent tones of blue. The Summer House has been designed to feel suitable for a cliff side beach restaurant with a high end touch. With ranging wood textures, vibrant tiles, blown glass features and soft fabrics.”
There was a want from the clients to create a real WOW moment with a nautical theme in the restaurant. Absolute designed a contemporary ceiling feature by curving laser cut birch plywood to replicate the hull of a boat or a Cornish wave. Plush velvets have been used to create beautifully curved booth seating towards the rear of the space, a way to ensure everyone dining has an eyeline of the incredible views. Lighting within the Summer House has been carefully chosen and Absolute has juxtaposed the large white metal, nautical touch pendants with delicate, blue blown glass which create a cluster in the space.
Full height glass bi folding doors have been installed across the front elevation of the restaurant. Looking ahead to the summer months the bi fold doors help create a feeling of internal/external dining yet in the winter will provide warm and cosy sanctuary from which to enjoy winters waves. Being a Cornish company, Absolute was proud to work on a Cornish project in such a beautiful location.
Food at Summer House is grounded in the local area. The menu changes regularly to utilise the very best in seasonal ingredients, from land and from the sea. Standout dishes currently on the menu include roast duck breast, crushed squash, ceps and charred leeks; corn fed chicken supreme, sweet potato, Swiss chard and chicken jus; and pan fired brill, wild mushrooms, radishes, saffron potatoes and brown butter sauce. There is also a tapas menu that is available between 12pm and 3pm. In contrast to the locally sourced, the wine list at Summer House is a global affair with bottles from mainland Europe, Oceania and South America.
Summer House is the latest hospitality venture for the Job family. The family also operates The Watering Hole and Alcatraz, both of which are located on Perranporth Beach. Alcatraz, which opened a few days before Summer House, is a bistro and café built into the cliff at the entrance to the beach.
The Watering Hole, meanwhile, is a hugely popular destination for beach goers in the area. Alongside its food and drink offering, The Watering Hole is also a year round music venue and boasts its own surf school.
Summer house is a welcome and unique addition to the Cornish hospitality landscape. The stunning location in which it sits has helped generate significant interest and the venue has all the ingredients to be one of the openings in the area this year.
