Monread Fare – A new force in Forecourt Convenience

In comparison to their European counterparts, forecourt convenience retail stores across Ireland are leading the way in terms of contemporary design and up–to-date technology. There is substantial ongoing investment in the development of new sites by forward-thinking owners.

An example of this is the Monread Fare, a new state-of-the-art Service Station located in Naas, Co. Kildare, launched by the Lidon Group in May last year. The Lidon Group, established in 1954, operate across Leinster with a range of Motor Dealerships, Agricultural Machinery, Forecourt Convenience and Food & Beverage offerings. They run some very successful Service Stations including Junction 14 Mayfield, M3 Mulhuddart Services and Fitzpatrick’s New Lodge in Monasterevin, Co. Kildare.

MILLIMETRE DESIGN were appointed to carry out the interior architecture, design and fit out of this new Service Station, for the Lidon Group in Naas. They were also commissioned to design the building’s architectural aesthetic, including the dramatic entrance canopy as well as developing the brand identity for the food market.  Having the same design studio responsible for developing and implementing all visual elements of the brand, was critical in achieving a cohesive and consistent brand image.

Monread Fare offers a state-of-the-art forecourt facility with 12 Texaco fuel pumps, seating for 50 people along with a Spar convenience store and deli, Freshly Chopped, Papa John’s Pizza, The Chicken Guys and Insomnia cáfe.

William Hanley, Head of Projects MILLIMETRE DESIGN, explained “The design concept for this project originated from researching and understanding the local topological environment around the site of the project. This was used as inspiration and extrapolated to create the architectural lines of the building’s entrance canopy design”.

The entrance canopy flows inside the building, with no apparent break in the design thus linking the external elements to the interior space. To achieve the desired effect, a complex lighting design and system was developed with Domus Projects for the canopy link, external and internal sections.

Kemil Kesey Naidoo, Project Designer MILLIMETRE DESIGN, added, “The canopy design is the main design element from which the whole store design evolved. The ceiling design concept, totem, joinery, façade were all elements that originated from the lines of the design on the structural columns of the entrance canopy”.

Warm colours with petrol blue accents and natural material throughout the space created an inviting and warm space. Also subtle touches of raw materials like brickwork & stonework and the furniture used, brought a level of sophistication to the design.

The interior layout is over two floors with the main customer floor and ‘back-of-house’ areas being on the ground floor and the staff areas and other staff amenities being on the first floor. In order to connect the two floors, the same look and feel used on the ground floor space was brought to the upper level in subtle ways (i.e. colour scheme, materials, furniture).

During every stage of the project the design team worked closely with all parties involved to find innovative design solutions. For example, the use of latest development in materials technology (Barrisol) for the ceiling detail.

Much time was given seeking out the appropriate experts to guide the creation of the perfect solution. And the final result was worth it. A modern, bright and fresh interior for customers to enjoy.

The next exciting project for the Lidon Group which is currently in the design development phase with their design partner MILLIMETRE DESIGN, is the extension and refurbishment of the hugely successful Junction 14 Mayfield outlet. And we can’t wait to see it!
