Jiva Spa and Wellness Centre at St James’ Court Hotel
A new Jiva Spa and Wellness Centre at the St James’ Court Hotel, London, has recently been completed by Emil Eve Architects. Opened in early March to both hotel guests and locals, the new spa boasts a unique concept born out of collaboration between Taj’s award winning Jiva Spa and the British lifestyle brand Temple Spa.
Located in the Victorian cellars of the luxury Taj Hotel, the spa facilities include a glowing vitality pool which wraps around the hotel’s original brick walls, a steam room clad in continuous milled sections of Carrara marble and a sauna created from solid sections of thermally treated Alder wood. In addition, two single treatment rooms and one couple’s suite incorporate bespoke walnut joinery and a marble-clad bathing area.
As well as being a tranquil haven, the Jiva Spa includes state of the art fitness facilities along with personal trainers to design personalised fitness plans and arrange private, on demand, yoga sessions for the guests.
Emil Eve architects spent four months developing the unique design which took 9 months to complete on site. Ross Perkin, Director of Emil Eve Architects, delved into the design of the spa with Premier Hospitality Magazine:
“From the initial meeting, the hotel managers were really excited about our ideas for the project. The spa and wellness centre are located in the basement of the expansive Victorian building but the area allocated to the facility was very limited so we had to work hard to make the layout work efficiently and to create a unique atmosphere and feeling of space.
“We used Carrara marble and white terrazzo to create bright and luxurious surfaces for the floors and changing areas, contrasting with darker walls, relaxation areas and treatment rooms. Bespoke walnut joinery and doors have been incorporated throughout along with ambient lighting by Viabizzunno.”
“We wanted to create something atmospheric and rich so we started by looking at the existing textures in the space. We discovered that the basement was built from Victorian bricks so we decided to expose these and test a range of techniques for applying a finish. In the end we used a black clay plaster which beautifully reveals the texture of the bricks through its surface.
“The real highlight of the spa is the vitality pool, which has been sunk below floor level and tiled in bright white mosaics with a Carrara terrazzo surround. On entering the spa, the light level drops to a warm ambient glow so the brightness of the pool creates real drama in the dark space. The pool itself has two discreet bathing areas: the main area leads into a more secluded space where guests can have more privacy.
“The next stage of the visitors’ journey is the steam room, made entirely from milled curving slabs of Carrara marble, giving it a soft but high quality feeling. The sauna is lighter in design and formed using Alder timber slats, which have a rich smell of the forest. Again, we used an existing space for this, which has an irregular shape ideal for a sauna. The treatment rooms also incorporate marble, dark timber and exposed brickwork.”
The introduction of the new spa follows a refurbishment of guest rooms at the hotel last summer. The renovation means guest rooms boast the perfect blend of heritage and contemporaneity in accordance with the hotel’s commitment to ‘reinventing tradition’, complementing the ‘English Classics, Reinvented’ series.
St. James’ Court has 338 rooms and suites, offers complimentary Wi-Fi, premier Golden Keys Concierge service and an exceptional range of dining options with four restaurants and two bars. Exceeding the expectations of today’s discerning traveller, St. James’ Court is a slice of the past served up on a contemporary platter.
Reflecting on the Spa, Ross concludes:
“The atmosphere we’ve created at Jiva Spa is really special; it feels like you’re entering into another world. The design palette of the hotel is more traditional so we wanted to contrast this and give guests the sense of entering into a place away from their everyday worries and the hectic city where they can just relax.”
