London-based hospitality interior design and branding specialists B3 Designers has unveiled its latest design project, in the refurbishment of renowned Chelsea haunt; Manicomio’s all-day dining Café and Bar in Chelsea.
Manicomio, meaning ‘mental hospital’ in Italian, is located in a refurbished former military asylum on Duke of York Square, just off the King’s Road, and serves casual dining options from breakfast through to lunch, and light evening snacks including coffees, afternoon tea, and wine and cocktails until late.
Manicomio’s brief to B3 Designers was to maximise the dining area, private dining room and banquette seating space. Additionally, they were asked to increase covers, and make the bar area more inviting and refined in order to reflect the casual, yet sophisticated menu the restaurant offers. It was important for B3 Designers to create a space that seamlessly transitioned from open and bright day-time café to an evening wine bar.
B3 drew inspiration for the design and colour palette from the madness of surrealism, as a playful tribute to the heritage of the building. The colour palette has evolved to one of warm accents and pops of colour such as reds, balanced with selective subtle colourful tones to soften the scheme. Banquettes are deep and dark, chairs and tables are made of natural materials and the velvet upholstery on the café and bar seating is vibrantly red as is the door that separates the private dining room from the bar. Specially-curated surrealist-themed artwork and peach antique mirrors in white painted frames decorate the longer walls along the banquettes.
The bolder black and white accents of the previous incarnation were woven delicately into finishes such as the tile work, wall finishes, and the new monolithic marble-look porcelain 12-seat bar front and counter – a real centrepiece of the new café and bar. New banquettes have been cleverly and elegantly extended in order to create the 20-cover dining area and 36-cover private dining room. And the lighting is a combination of existing black-shaded pendants along the bar, and modern brass minimalist pendants running alongside the banquettes.
Manicomio offers diners a number of menu options, from a la carte, vegan and set lunch to a bar snack menu, and wine and cocktail lists.

The company has completed work for a number of high-profile hospitality groups including Olivo Restaurants, Chucs Restaurants, Venchi, Maroush and Unico Gelato, as well as numerous independent London restaurants.
Colosseum Catering has a strong working relationship with Manicomio, dating back 15 years, and is able to operate closely with Manicomio’s development team to make sure projects are delivered on time and in budget.
The company was recently chosen to work on the refurbishment of Manicomio Deli in Chelsea, delivering the front of house area and a bespoke wash up facility.
