Cottonmill Spa at Sopwell House

Sparcstudio Design was appointed by the Bejerano’s three years ago to develop the Interiors and Architectural design for a large-scale spa development which included a total refurbishment of the existing spa areas and the addition of a large three storey extension facing on to a new private spa garden. Sparcstudio worked with Debi Green to develop the operational details and ISA architects were appointed to assist with the delivery of the building itself.

Comfort was key in the design of all elements throughout the spa so there are lots of deep bespoke sofas laden with cushions in grey, green and aqua shades crafted from fabrics.

Sparcstudio worked closely with garden designer Ann- Marie Powell to create a seamless transition between the inside and outside spaces. The interiors aesthetic that they developed could be described as ‘Refined Nature’ with a materials palette formed from cool neutral, warm terracotta textures, dark green slate, lime washed grey oak veneers, concrete, Onice Smeraldo marble, brass bespoke fret cut screens and fluted timber panelling to walls and ceilings in some areas. A key accent finish running through the scheme is the beautiful ‘Onice Smeraldo’ marble with its intense aqua blue veining and ochre tones.

Beverley Bayes, Director of Sparcstudio said: “Special attention has been paid to ensure a smooth flow and exciting journey for the different spa users which includes hotel residents and exclusive areas for The Club at Cottonmill with dedicated ‘Dressing Rooms’, beautiful private spaces and surrounding spa garden.”

The Cottonmill spa journey begins in the reception which is housed within the whitewashed country manor house, a former Georgian country residence of Lord Mountbatten. From here, guests can glimpse through the sleek black metal crittal glass screens and double-sided bookcases that line the reception into the other spaces of the spa.

The Salon

This is a bright, airy social space featuring banquette seating in which to enjoy a pre-treatment glass of champagne or Cottonmill Prosecco, bespoke designed manicure stations and a hair styling and makeup station. A double-sided bookcase separates the pedicure area which has luxury bespoke designed pedicure thrones upholstered in leather.

The Sitting Room

The Sitting Room is the social hub of the spa housed within the original part of the house, complete with large windows to one side. Guests can relax around the island fireplace or cosy up in one of the banquette seats. There is a glamorous brass faced bar with back lit marble counter where guests can enjoy a freshly prepared juice, cocktail, or hot drinks.

The Pantry

A new dining experience has been created at The Pantry for spa guests offering the perfect lunchtime dining spot, which can be enjoyed in the comfort of a robe. The centre piece is a large hot and cold buffet counter and the interior has a fresh ‘garden like’ feel with rich terracotta and natural oak panelling interspersed with shelving laden with fresh herbs. The floor is a combination of terracotta geometric tiling and washed oak herringbone timber.

The Gym

This space has large Georgian windows to two sides overlooking the gardens. The remaining walls are lined with rich green wall panelling in a faceted design interspersed with full height back lit mirrors. Guests are greeted at an island-style welcome arrival desk, which has a Caesarstone top and sides clad with salvaged wood faceted panelling.

They can also help themselves to a post workout ice cold towel from one of the many rolled up on display in the glass fronted fridge or grab themselves some fresh fruit. The Gym is equipped with State-of-the-art Technogym ‘Artis’ line equipment, combining an integrated collection of cardio strength and functional training products. It is zoned so that weights and cardio training sit in their own areas.

The Studio

The Studio is a truly multi-functional area, designed as a flexible space with clever lighting scenes and lots of storage, and is able to accommodate a diverse range of classes such as spinning, yoga and HITT classes. The studio can also subdivide to create more intimate small group classes and there are TRX points for group suspension training.
The Club at Cottonmill facilities host the Garden Room which has beautiful views and the perfect atmosphere for relaxing day or night. The Hydro-pool has bubble beds and massage jets and sits both inside and outside into the gardens. And then the first floor spa ‘Whisper Room’ which holds saunas and bespoke treatment rooms.
