A staple of the Cardiff hospitality scene for over 20 years, Le Monde in Cardiff is enjoying a revitalisation having returned to the ownership of the Martinez family, who originally opened it in 1985.

Le Monde was originally opened by the late Mr Martinez in 1985 as an upmarket fish and chips restaurant. The restaurant’s reputation quickly grew and it became one of the city’s hottest destinations, particularly on international rugby match days. Prior to the beginning of 2019, Le Monde was run and managed by a different organisation but has now relaunched with Mr Martinez’s son Tanny at the helm.

The restaurant is all about locally sourced ingredients that are second to none and complemented by an extensive wine and beer range, which leaves a lasting impression. All the meat and fish on the menu is prepared from scratch at the restaurant using traditional skills. Le Monde takes great pride in the provenance of its ingredients, only using Welsh and Scottish beef, and Welsh lamb. Local fish is a particular speciality of the restaurant, with the long established family fishmonger Snowden & Co on hand to supply fresh and frozen fish.

The interior of the restaurant is a subtle blend of contemporary and traditional style. Wood features prominently throughout, from the flooring and tables to chairs and decoration. A large bar runs the length of the space and provides a sleek focal point for diners. A warm, cosy and intimate feel leaves a lasting impression.

The menus are subject to daily change depending on what produce has been delivered. Sample main courses from the dinner menu include Grilled Fillet of Scottish Salmon served with Jersey Royal New Potatoes and Hollandaise Sauce; Slow Roast Shank of Lamb on a Bed of winter Vegetables with a Red Wine Jus; Grilled Fillets of Chicken with a Spicy Coconut and Pimento Salsa; and ½ Honey Roasted Duck served on a bed of Red Cabbage with a Peppercorn Sauce.

Le Monde’s collection of more than 800 wines, including rare vintages, is one of the largest outside of London. From superb house wines suitable for any occasion to fine wines from around the globe, there is always something to fit the mood.

Le Monde is open seven days a week providing a lunchtime and dinner service, except on Sundays when the restaurant is closed in the evening. It also boasts two private dining/function areas and has the capacity to cater for large groups.
