Whitbread’s contemporary steak brand, Bar + Block Steakhouse, has opened. The new steak-focussed all-day casual dining restaurant opened on 1st November in central Sutton on St Nicholas Way, just off the High Street.

Bar + Block Sutton is a 589sqm, 229 cover informal steakhouse serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, with an emphasis on delivering high quality steaks at high-street prices. Signature dishes include rotating steak specials from the Butcher’s Block, grazing plates and handmade burgers prepared on-site using prime beef.  Steak aficionados will be able to enjoy speciality cuts such as Tira De Ancho (a 12oz spiral cut ribeye), and chargrilled 10oz Argentine Picanha (served with chimichurri sauce and a jacket potato topped with garlic, lemon and chive mayo).

An extensive drinks range is also on offer to be enjoyed at your table or the bar, with a focus on craft beers, specially curated wines and innovative cocktails with seasonal specials. Signature cocktails include Rhubarb Gin Fizz and an indulgent Candyfloss Martini (candyfloss topped with Smirnoff Vodka and White Zinfandel Rosé, shaken with cranberry and lime).

PREMIER HOSPITALITY MAGAZINE spoke with Hannah Schiavone of Harrison HN, the designers Of Bar + Block Sutton. She said:

“We helped develop the Bar +Block concept about four years ago, so we’ve been working with them ever since. We do all of the Bar + Blocks, all of the conversions and new builds. With Sutton, it very much stuck to the original scheme. Obviously with different buildings, implementing it might be a different process because of different layouts and sizes, and so some features might vary.

“On Sutton’s site, the main feature is the island bar, which has copper shelving which you can sort of see through, so it’s an open space with a feature bar and not one or the other. All of the materials are quite rustic and warm. The brand colours, (the oranges), feature in tiled areas, and we put lots of planting in to reinforce the freshness of the venue.

“With Sutton, the challenge was that it’s one of our biggest sites. The entrances are on the opposite sides, there are very high ceilings in the space- it’s pretty much a rectangular space so it was pretty straightforward from that point of view.”

In further detail, the modern interior design features an expansive bar with copper detailing, butcher’s table and an open kitchen, complemented by rustic reclaimed wood, high quality fabrics, comfy booth seating and warm lighting. Decorative finishing touches include the brand’s signature neon cow, alongside a number of contemporary artwork pieces.

Joanna Spencer, Senior Brand & Marketing Manager from Whitbread Restaurants, said: “The Bar + Block Steakhouse brand is undergoing rapid expansion and is set for considerable growth in 2020. Our newest Sutton site is our 12th location. We are delighted to be contributing to the local food and drink scene, providing a new all-day destination restaurant for the community.”

Hannah finished:  “This project is definitely one that Harrisons are proud of. We developed the development scheme and it’s great to see it’s doing well across the board and that they’re continuing to roll them out. Overall it’s been a great project.”
