Powerscourt Distillery Visitor Centre – Blending Heritage with Excellence

Located in the old mill house of the magnificent Powerscourt Estate and set against the backdrop of the Sugar Loaf Mountain, the new Powerscourt Distillery Visitor Centre is a fantastic new addition to Wicklow’s tourism sector and Ireland’s ever-growing whiskey renaissance.

Once the epicentre of farming on the Powerscourt Estate, the old mill house has been successfully restored and extended to accommodate the Distillery and the installation of a unique Visitor Centre, which opened its doors in May this year.

Together with tours, events and whiskey retail, the distillery and visitor centre at Powerscourt Estate, provides a unique opportunity to witness the daily activities of an operational distillery within the ancient surroundings of the stunning Powerscourt Estate.

To achieve Powerscourt Distillery’s high experiential ambitions, MILLIMETRE DESIGN were appointed as interior architecture and design consultants for the fit out of the new Visitor Centre, to include an intimate AV theatre, six carefully appointed tasting rooms, a gift shop and café bar.

Faced with the task of overhauling a 19th century venue in need of modern retail requirements, MILLIMETRE DESIGN set about creating a uniquely Irish experience and an operational space that built on the brand’s tradition of uncompromising quality and time-honoured craftsmanship.

The design journey took the classic contemporary route, with a slightly more modern direction taken while still adhering to the touch points of the traditional distillery setting. MILLIMETRE DESIGN implemented a timeless sense of style that remains constant throughout, resonating the beautiful location in which the distillery is located.

Their approach to the interior design focused on the materials reminiscent throughout the distillery and its setting (i.e. oak, natural stone & copper), as well as the clients desire to create timeless interiors oozing sophistication and luxury, synonymous with their Fercullen Whiskey brand.

Entering into this revitalised space, visitors are now greeted with a classic, minimalistic interior, and the stunning “Sugar Loaf Mountain” detail of the reception desk.

The reception space is filled with a variety of materials including exposed stone, copper and natural oak.  Alongside restored features, a new pyran glass floor showcases the original underground old mill, providing visitors with a key view into the past heritage of the Powerscourt Estate. This view is complemented by a soundscape echoing the running water mill. The original flagstone floor in this area has been reclaimed, alongside the installation of premium herringbone flooring, setting the scene for the quality throughout this unique fitout.

On completion of the distillery tour, visitors are guided back to the final stop, the retail experience and distillery Café. The quality retail space guides visitors through, with clever use of bespoke joinery, using materials such as solid oak, brass and copper. The floor material is a rich oak solid herringbone, with brass trim details. Also visible are the exposed old stone walls of the Millhouse, protected and respected. The café is open and bright, and the premium quality finish continues to be felt and displayed throughout.

Also set in the Old Mill House are four tasting rooms, tailored for smaller or private groups, and offer corporate groups alternative experiences and spaces. These elegant rooms have been designed with premium finishes and décor throughout.

Designed to the Millimetre

MILLIMETRE DESIGN’s Managing Director, Ronan Holohan, comments: “It was important to us that the tone and mood of the newly created spaces embodied the premium quality of Powerscourt Distillery’s Fercullen whiskey product.

Influenced by the traditional whiskey barrel and incorporating the use of warm materials such as rich cedarwood, natural oak and copper throughout the Visitor Centre, we homed in on Powerscourt Distillery’s specialism and provided visitors with a contemporary view into the heritage behind this exceptional product.”

Reflecting on the project, Ashley Gardiner, Co-founder/Director, Powerscourt Distillery, remarks:

“From the beginning, MILLIMETRE DESIGN’s detailed, hand’s-on approach and total commitment to the entire process was nothing short of outstanding. MILLIMETRE DESIGN achieved a remarkable result in line with our brand vision and values for the Powerscourt Distillery Visitor Centre.”
