Crow Wood

Crow Wood Hotel is a brand-new luxury hotel designed by ICA—set in 40 acres of private parkland in Burnley, Lancashire, within the Crow Wood resort. With spectacular views of Pendle Hill and the surrounding countryside, a beautiful ornamental lake and fabulous gardens, it is a most wonderful place in which to unwind.

With 76 luxurious bedrooms and suites, unrivalled wedding and conference facilities, award-winning chefs and the multi award-winning Woodland Spa, it is destined to become the hotel, spa & wedding venue of choice in Lancashire for 2020 and beyond.

Crow Wood was already an established leisure destination prior to construction of the hotel. Andrew Brown of Crow Wood Leisure had developed the site incrementally over several years, with the hotel providing the final piece in the jigsaw at Crow Wood that comprises Bertram’s Restaurant, a members-only leisure club & sports facility, ‘Soccer Burnley’, as well as the Woodland Spa.

With this ensemble of quality leisure provision, Andrew wanted to build a hotel to complement and enhance the existing businesses on site. In particular, the Spa was proving so popular—with its 11 guest rooms booking up far in advance—that the hotel was needed in order to enable the business to grow by marketing longer spa breaks in addition to satisfying the day spa market. Andrew also envisioned developing Crow Wood to become an unrivalled wedding and conference venue for Lancashire—and the new-build hotel would form the nucleus of this business plan.

ICA delivered the architecture and interior design for the project. Ewan Armour of ICA said: “Our client had never developed a hotel before and so he approached us based on our leading reputation in the hospitality market. Wishing to develop and operate without the support of a brand, Andrew recognised the expertise and value that ICA would bring to his project as hotel consultants and designers, ensuring that he would get the best possible product for his investment.”

Over the past sixteen years, ICA have accumulated an extensive portfolio that includes both new-build and refurb of branded and boutique hotels (as well as projects in other sectors). Crow Wood is the latest family-developed-and-operated new-build hotel that ICA have created to specifically target the wedding & conference market.

Ewan commented: “We were given quite a brief! Andrew came to us with tremendous vision and aspirations, which we managed to navigate and deliver within the constraints of the site and budget. I think we can all look back and say we have created something to be proud of.”

Dawnvale, who have previously done work for Crow Wood, were appointed to help design, manufacture and fit the bars that run within the hotel. This included decorative finishes, equipment and key features such as the illuminated marble back bar displays, and alongside the bespoke curved booths for the restaurant area they also supplied all the furniture throughout all the reception areas. These include; quilted upholstered booths in the pre function area, lounge chairs, restaurant chairs, high stools and bespoke manufactured reception chairs.

They were also responsible for proposing and designing all the fabrics and ensuring the complimenting piping and studding finishes worked within each area.In the bedrooms and suites, Dawnvale have manufactured the luxurious velvet chairs for the and the desk chairs in fabrics and finishers that complimented the spaces.

Jacob Reagan of Dawnvale commented: “Andrew has an eye for detail and had a good understanding of the look he was trying to achieve, however,  we worked alongside the team in order to help offer alternative finishes that would help value engineer particular areas to ensure the bars were within budget. This is always difficult as you never want to compromise the overall design!”

Claire Hunter, also of Dawnvale added: “There are a few standout elements. We supplied some bespoke curved, fixed-seating booths with a new product – printed porcelain. We used this for the table tops throughout the restaurant area and we actually branded the tops with a brass metal finish detail. It is a very durable material and because it’s new it’s quite different, and it does look amazing.

“Overall, it was hugely important to be involved with this project. We did the refurbishment of the Woodland Spa reception and coffee shop area last year, so we had a nice relationship with the client already, but to have the opportunity to be involved in something so prestigious gives us a lot of pride. They are lovely people and a pleasure to work for.”

Jacob added: “It is always important to be involved in a project with an existing customer. It shows that the projects previously completed were taken care of correctly, that the customer was left happy and the finish has stood the test of time. There is no better compliment then being asked to carry out repeat business especially within such a prestigious boutique hotel.”
