Ramside Hall is continually looking at new investment opportunities to enhance the customer experience and develop its hospitality offering. With this in mind, the new decade started with a bang following the launch of a collection of luxury treehouses set in the estate’s woodland.
Situated adjacent to the 18th fairway of The Prince Bishops Golf Course, the treehouses give guests unrivalled views over the fairway and green. Each treehouse can be used as a complete unit, offering one, three-bedroom lodge or it can be split into one-bedroom and two-bedroom suites.
“The treehouses are something that have been in the works for about three years, and before that there were plans for lodges,” said Tim Boyd, Ramside Hall General Manager. “We did a lot of research to get a clear idea of what we were looking to create. At the moment we will have three large ones to start with but we have planning permission for six in total.”
The treehouses provide a contemporary design and style, with a high proportion of windows to maximise natural light on the site. The treehouses have been erected on stilts, and each one features three bedrooms, a private living room and a state-of-the-art bathroom, complete with a free-standing copper bath. A wraparound balcony with sunken hot tubs adds the ultimate touch of luxury to this stunning accommodation offering.
The architecture for the project has been undertaken by Padgett White Architects Limited. Owner John White commented:
“We’ve worked with the hotel and John Adamson (Ramside Estates – Director) for the last 20 years, including the bedroom extension and luxury spa a few years ago. The brief for this project developed as the work progressed but John Adamson had seen some treehouses at a hotel in Hampshire, so had seen the concept. We went to have a look at them and then developed the brief with John Adamson for the Ramside development. They have been specifically designed for the site in response to the brief to provide flexibility in letting arrangement.
“The Treehouse concept was new to us but the design theory is a development of our existing hotel and hospitality design knowledge.”
The treehouses can accommodate up to 12 adults at a time, with amenities including tea and coffee facilities, hairdryer, Flat LCD Screen TV, Sky Sports, complementary toiletries and free Wi-Fi.
Reflecting on this addition, Tim concluded:
“Ramside Hall has been run as a family business for the past 50 years, now in the hands of the third generation. The hotel is constantly investing, which included £16m on a new wing of 47 bedrooms, the award-winning spa and a second championship golf course a few years.
“The treehouses is the latest in a long line of projects to enhance our offering.”
John added:
“At the end of the day it was a great opportunity to be involved in such a bespoke development.”

A highly-skilled team is available to offer a wide range of therapeutic beauty and treatment rituals in sumptuous treatment rooms, using only the finest Natura Bisse and ESPA products.
The food and drink offering at Ramside is similarly well covered and is home to some of Durham’s finest restaurants. The signature Rib Room steakhouse and grill serves up a range of delicious meat dishes while the award-winning Fusion restaurant produces an intoxicating array of Pan-Asian cuisine. Pemberton’s Carvery serves a roast every day and the Clubhouse is home to a wide range of sandwiches and burgers.
Completing the Ramside Hall experience are two, 18-hole championship golf courses. Both courses offer stunning views of the surrounding countryside with Durham Cathedral sitting in the distance to provide a golfing experience like no other in the region. Playable throughout the whole year, both the Cathedral and Prince Bishops’ courses are open to members and non-members

Our expert erectors then installed the treehouse super structures on site.

The outstanding circular roof and design along with the high specification of the project has allowed us to showcase the innovation and unlimited potential inherent in SIPs off-site manufacture.
