niu Loom Hotel

In the wake of top locations in the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland, NOVUM Hospitality has now taken its next expansion step in Europe with its brand niu. niu Loom Hotel is NOVUM’s first UK hotel, and it opened at the end of 2019, in Manchester.

It is a 135-room hotel under the millennial brand niu in an extremely central location in Queens Road, Cheetham Hill. The niu hotel therefore takes its place among a portfolio of around 45 niu project developments comprising approximately 10,000 rooms within the next 2-3 years.

PREMIER HOSPITALITY spoke to Linda Brage, of Core Real Estate, about their involvement in nui Loom.

How did you get involved in the project?

“Core Real Estate was part of the purchase of the land where the hotel is, and it went under a separate vehicle called Manchester Queens road limited. We then hooked up with NOVUM, the operators running niu Loom hotel. Within my company I am the interior designer, so we all linked together there, and another branch of my company is design and development in the commercial sector, so as a group we offered the development side and design side of the hotel to NOVUM.”

What was the design brief?

“The brief was to incorporate the personality of Manchester, and take on the history of the surrounding area. NOVUM always look to the local area, and want to inject that personality into their hotels to create a fun, inviting environment for their guests.”

How did the design reflect that?

“I looked into the history of Manchester, and found that a lot of its industry started with cotton mills, and there are a lot of existing buildings from that era. So I looked into creating a very authentic feel of the Manchester Cotton Industry. It was about drawing the guests attention to that history.

“The hotel is a really young, fun environment, and I’ve taken that on board with the colours and the mill design- and I used industrial furniture with natural finishes, to get that industrial feel of an old factory.”

Were there any challenges?

“Because it’s a new build hotel it was certainly a lot easier than trying to put a design onto an existing building. With this one, there were little tweaks that could be made to the building as it was being built to fit the design. It was nice to have a design go smoothly.”

How important was being involved in the hotel?

“This project has been a very important step for us, we’ve worked on many commercial developments before, but really, building something from scratch was the next step for us- it was great.”
