Tech Music School expands

A £3 million pound project to provide Barclay House with a modern music teaching facility has reached completion.

The Barclay House Tech Music School project has seen an existing facility completely updated to provide fantastic new provisions for students. The building now boasts three large live performance rooms; a number of dedicated instrumental and vocal teaching studios; a recording studio suite and music production teaching studio; four digital audio workstation studios; two keyboard suites; a student common room; and a practice room suite.

Tech Music School Principal, Andrew Bates, said:

“Barclay House will provide students with world class contemporary music facilities when it opens in September 2013.

“The investment in Barclay House will ensure that Tech Music School students have the opportunity to develop their skills in a high quality learning environment located close to the heart of the UK music industry.”

Elliott Thomas Group was the main contractor on the Barclay House Tech Music School project, whilst Jones Lang LaSalle provided all architectural services. Elliot Thomas Group is the UK’s leading provider of construction services and skills and specialises in logistics, construction, hoists and carpentry.

Elliott Thomas Group Project Manager, Mark Varney, said:

“The project saw the refurbishment of an existing building in order to modernise it for Tech Music School’s use. We conducted a complete strip-out to take the building back to the beams; then we implemented a mechanical, electrical and acoustical fit out in order to bring the building up to the standards required for such a facility.

“When we took on the project there were no dividing walls within the building, so every room in the building is a new addition. Most of the work undertaken was internal, however an external disabled platform lift was installed towards the latter stages of the programme and acoustic louvers were added to the roof to combat noise pollution emitted by the air conditioning units.”

Work began on the project at the end of November 2012 and reached completion in June 2013. Now that work is complete on the building Tech Music School will relocate from their former facility in Acton, West London in time to welcome 850 students during the September 2013 term.

Mark said:

“At Elliott Thomas Group we have a lot of experience within the industry and we always aim to go beyond what is expected to meet the requirements of our clients. Work ran very smoothly on the project, the feedback has been great and we appreciated being a part of this very important project for Tech Music School.”

Mark added:

“This is a much better facility than what the School previously used and it will double their capacity, providing more opportunities for students.”

A Fletcher and Sons Ltd is conducting a number of works on the project at Barclay House, including lead flashing work on the roof, the removal of masonry, the creation of a drop curb and some structural opening works.

Commenting on the project, A Fletcher and Sons Ltd Company Owner, Andy Fletcher, said:

“Working alongside Elliot Thomas is very important to us. We appreciate all of the work we do and it is great to be involved with this project for Tech Music School.”
