Based in London, Robert Angell Design Studio is a young expanding company currently working throughout the UK and Europe.

Prior to establishing the studio in 2010, Robert Angell worked alongside David Collins for fifteen years as Creative Director, gaining an extensive knowledge of the industry and experience in creating original ideas and delivering them.

Over the last decade, Robert has designed some of the most prestigious and luxurious restaurants, hotels, residential and retail interiors for the biggest brands. With an acute understanding for clients with discerning tastes, Robert’s studio is able to interpret and write briefs to deliver unique and well considered interior design.

Fast becoming one of the leading British designers, Robert took time to talk to Premier Hospitality about his company, he said:

“Our projects are designed with an individual and unique approach which allows for a bespoke solution. Taking projects through to completion, the client is assured and informed during the design process and construction phases thus giving the client the satisfaction that their project are in very capable and experienced hands. I oversee every project and direct the rest of the studio to ensure that every part of the project has been considered and designed with the closest attention to detail.”

One such project to receive the Robert Angell treatment was The Berkeley Hotel in the heart of Knightsbridge. The studio created the new Balcony King Rooms high above the rooftops of London, where guests are invited to step out and take a moment to observe the capital’s superb skyline from the comfort of their own room.

Speaking about this project, Robert said: “With soft warm tones of pale dove greys and ochres the quality of the natural light coming in is really enhanced. The look is a refined tailored look with English made furniture, fabrics and styling. The attention to detail is exquisite with hand stitched leather headboards, crafted metal and marble night stands and brushed pale grey timber furniture. Some of the bathrooms have been extended to include a large luxurious shower clad in warm grey marble and a lacquered dressing table area. There is an eclectic mix of styles which form a contemporary timeless and elegant series of rooms in which to relax and spend time at The Berkeley.”

Robert went on to discuss several other projects that his studio has helped bring to life, including The Hilton Islington and Piccolino in Mayfair. On the recently opened celebrity haunt, Rose Club in London he said:

“The brief was to create a dynamic dance club with a speakeasy vibe that looks like a rose shop from the front, but when you enter and descend the stairway it becomes an Alice in Wonderland experience, opening up into a mirrored jewel box inspired room with performing ballerinas.

“The big idea was to create a jewellery box with mirrored walls and ceiling to accentuate the space to create volume and the illusion of space. The lighting played a big part and the best solution was to create a grid of led lights recessed onto the mirrors which create infinity and a kaleidoscopic range of colour and movement.”

As part of the £5.2 million refurbishment of its guest rooms, to be completed June 2013, Robert Angell Design Studio were appointed by the Hilton Islington to create bespoke, clean cut and sophisticated bedrooms.

Speaking about the work carried out on the hotel, Robert said: “The materials and fabrics are based around a tailored pin striped suit; sharp neutrals, greys and blacks highlighted by aubergine piping and stitch details which would reference a tie or scarf bringing colour to a tailored suit. The materials are classically British with a custom design dog tooth wool carpet, beautifully patterned chaise upholstery and hand stitched leather headboards. Every detail has been considered with the guest experience at the forefront as the end user.”

Away from the hustle and bustle, Piccolino located on Heddon Street offers relaxed Italian dining and with the revamped bar area the restaurant is a real treat. Speaking about the work carried out on Piccolino, Robert said:

“The brief was to create a bar with curve appeal in an otherwise dull private dining room within the lower ground floor that would complement the restaurant on the ground floor.

“Every element from the bar, the tables, the chairs, bar stools and wall mirrors were bespoke designs by Robert Angell Design Studio. Black and brass timber crate topped tables give elegance and lightness to the small room. Comfortable leather upholstered banquette seating with diamond and buttoned stitch details. Polished brass diamond shaped framed mirrors give reflection and light to the space.

“The walls and lined in Horsehair fabric which not only give a sophisticated aura but are also acoustic baffles. A feature diamond facet cut wall mirror not only gives the illusion of space within this small area but also gives a dynamic look to the elements within the space without making customers feel uneasy looking at it.  The general colours for the scheme are olive green, black and gold which is conducive to both daytime eating and the more hedonistic evenings as a bar and through the lighting the right ambience can be created.”

Robert Angell Design Studio also undertook work on the recently covered Kaspar’s Seafood Bar & Grill at The Savoy and the elegant Five Fields in Chelsea.
