Situated in the Castle Quay area of Bedford, The Castle is a 19th Century traditional family-run inn, which provides guests with a warm welcome, a mouth watering menu and a strong selection of drinks.
The Castle is located close to the River Ouse and Bedford’s Cecil Higgins Museum and with a bed and breakfast offering available too, the pub is ideally placed for regulars and those passing through.
The Castle recently underwent a refurbishment to revitalise areas of the pub, in order to freshen up aspects of the venue whilst maintaining its unique character. Work began on the four-week project – implemented by Charles Wells Brewery – in January 2014 and reached completion in February.
Taylor & Co was the architectural designer on the project, whilst TJ Briggs was the main contractor. Premier Hospitality caught up with Mike Taylor, Owner of Taylor & Co and Tony Briggs, Owner of TJ Briggs & Sons Ltd, to find out a little more about the project.
Mike Taylor, said:
“The Castle in Bedford is a well known, community pub and bed & breakfast. On this project, we conducted a refurbishment, along with some conservation work to refresh the venue. We have updated areas of the pub which didn’t work as well as they could have and needed a little bit of redecoration.
“The site now highlights more quality finishes, more comfort and improved lighting. New windows were installed and some restoration works on the roof were conducted. The feedback has been very good and the refurbishment completely hit the mark.”
“We are involved with quite a number of pub refurbishments, as well as other leisure and hospitality works across the country and these are great projects to be involved with.”
“We mostly work within the hospitality sector and have worked with Charles Wells for almost 16 years. The project ran very smoothly and it was very important project for us to be involved with. At TJ Briggs we are proud of our high standard of work, which we were able to demonstrate on this job.”
The Castle offers a wide range of real ales, including Young’s Bitter, Wells Eagle IPA and Courage Directors. Meanwhile, the food menu is extensive and includes home cooked dishes, prepared with fresh local produce.
In addition to its drinks and food offering, The Castle has five en-suite bedrooms which are each named after famous castles: Edinburgh, Warwick, Windsor, Berkeley and The Bedford. All rooms include a flat screen TV with Freeview, DVD and Wi-Fi access. Prices range from £65 per night to £100, with check in times taking place after 2pm.
The Castle is open Monday to Wednesday 12pm to 11pm; Thursday 12pm to 12pm; Friday and Saturday 11am to 12pm and Sunday 12pm to 10:30pm. Food is served 12pm until 3pm seven days a week, with an evening service Tuesday to Friday.
