Costa Coffee, Edgbaston, Birmingham

Voted the nation’s favourite coffee shop for the third year in a row, Costa Coffee is the largest and fastest growing coffee chain in the UK.

The company was founded by Costa brothers Sergio and Bruno and over the years has become a household name along the high street.

Costa Coffee has stores in 29 countries across the world, as well as in the UK, and is always on the look-out for the most suitable locations with which to bring coffee to customers. A prime example of this is Costa’s new drive-thru store in Edgbaston, Birmingham the latest site to open in the heart of the Midlands which joins sister sites around the city including a popular store located within the Bull Ring.

Work began on creating the new store in Spring 2014 after a deal was brokered with Birmingham retail agency Redleaf and Edgbaston landlords Calthorpe Estates. DBK was the project manager, employer’s agent, quantity surveyor and CDMC on the creation of the new Costa store, whilst Brook Smith Planning was the planning consultant for the scheme.

The new Costa store is located at the Five Ways entrance to the Calthorpe Estate, Calthorpe Road and is housed within a Listed building. The refurbishment project was valued at £1.1 million and saw the existing building extended and fit-out to provide the high levels of quality that Costa customers have become accustomed to.

Costa Calthorpe Road is not only a great addition to the Costa portfolio, but it also marks the first time the chain has introduced a drive-thru store to its mix. Offering up great tasting coffee, plus a range of paninis, sandwiches, muffins and cakes, Costa Calthorpe Road covers 3,064 sq ft of retail and drive-thru space and has parking facilities for up to 11 vehicles.

Costa Coffee Acquisitions Manager, Tom Swords, said:

“We had been looking for the right site in Birmingham City Centre for some time and were delighted to secure this unit. Located on a main arterial route in and out of the city, it is in the perfect position for us.”

Director of Estates at Calthorpe Estates, said:

“The addition of a high quality coffee retailer has been part of our strategic plans to add to our growing Edgbaston centre customer offer.

“Our long-term vision for this part of Edgbaston is to provide comprehensive retail and leisure facilities that fully support the local working and resident community as well as providing a draw to visitors passing through.”

In addition to finding the right locations for its stores, Costa is always mindful of its impact on the environment, so aims to do everything possible to ensure sustainability is at the forefront of everything it does. Costa’s card cups are made from sustainable wood pulp from Northern European forests, whilst its energy saving coffee machines power down when not in use.
