The NHBC Health and Safety Awards is a UK exclusive health and safety award scheme which recognises those who stand out in home building.
Chiefly aimed at rewarding excellence in health and safety amongst home building, the awards ceremony was held on July 4th 2014 in Birmingham to identify the best and most successful sites.
Sam Plumbe, of Bellway Homes gladly accepted an award in the Large Builder category for Best Sites Award; after completing a site which met very high standards in terms of health and safety. The name of the site was The Flow and consisted of a block of 31 flats based in Balham, South London. The previous site housed a care home, but was transformed into a set of contemporary and stylish apartments with one, two and three bedrooms.
The project entailed a traditional build with precast concrete planks, Steel mansard roof frame with timber infill and double glazed dormer windows. In terms of features, the block contains a central gas heating system to avoid the distribution of gas to every apartment, solar panels on the flat insulation laid to falls roof. Completed recently, the demolition began in summer of 2013 and ran fairly smoothly producing victorious, award-winning results.
We caught up with Sam Plumbe, to ask a few questions on The Flow and his achievements; he claimed:
“The biggest difficulty we faced within the development was the roof, because there were numerous trades working on that part including the steel fabricator, carpenter, flat roofers, pitch roofers, lead workers, window fixers, solar panel installers, mansafe and mastic man.”
“The layout of the site lent itself to being safe for deliveries and the management of materials despite being a tight site. I’m really pleased with the results of The Flow.”
Other notable features that the apartments offer consist of LED downlighters to kitchen, living room, bathroom, en-suite and hallway; as well as external wall mounted lights on the balconies and terraces. Kitchen appliances featuring in each apartment include stainless steel three speed chimney extractor hood, stainless steel splash back to the rear of hob, integrated dishwasher and soft close fitting on all doors and drawers.
Bellway Homes have also ensured high security standards by fitting a video door entry system for all who wish to enter the building. Additionally, a security chain and spyhole to all apartment entry doors is in place.
The various flooring integrated within the building includes laminate wooden flooring to living room, kitchen and hallway; plain white ceramic floor tiling for bathrooms and en suite and finally carpet within all bedrooms. Walls within the apartments were finished with a white emulsion throughout to coat and protect individual walls.
The community has seen a difference with the arrival of the new flats, with an improvement of the surrounding area that they can admire. There is also a pedestrian access through the flats which creates a practical shortcut for passers-by.
Premier Construction spoke to Sam Plumbe about his commendable achievements, he said:
“I’m very pleased to have won the award, it is great to be acknowledged for hard work and also to know that everyone is able to meet the health and safety standards and complete work within deadlines.”
