Cielo Blanco, SBID International Design Awards 2014, Leeds Trinity

Situated in Leeds’ biggest shopping centre, Leeds Trinity, Cielo Blanco is a fantastic Mexican restaurant serving authentic street and market food inspired by the traditional dishes available in Mexico.

Located on the 2nd floor of the Trinity Centre, Cielo Blanco is open seven days a week, serving lunch and dinner as well as an extensive list of cocktails and non-alcoholic freshly-squeezed juices.

All food on offer at Cielo Blanco is prepared daily by the restaurant’s chefs, with produce sourced locally where possible. Tacos, quesadillas, burritos and enchiladas are popular choices, along with a selection of market dishes, tostadas, empanadas and flautas.

A range of superfood salads is available for those wanting to give their body a real boost, whilst sharing boards are on offer for diners who want to split their choices with a friend. Meanwhile, a tempting selection of sides and dips rounds out the menu.

In addition to its fantastic food offering, Cielo Blanco presents a truly magnificent drinks menu overseen by bar manager Nick Fox. Drinks include a range of South American favourites, alongside beers, wines and much, much more.

Yorkshire-based independent commercial interior designer, Normal TM provided all of the architectural design work on the project. Normal TM has a longstanding working relationship with Leelex Ltd – the company who owns Cielo Blanco – so were the natural choice for this project.

Speaking to Premier Hospitality, Darren Newby of Normal TM, said:

“We have been working on projects with our client for the past seven years. We started with a bar on Portobello Road in London, but more recently have been involved with a number of bar projects in Leeds and of course Cielo Blanco.

“The project took around seven months in total, which was a little longer than usual, but as this was the first Cielo Blanco we took our time ensuring the concept was developed exactly the way our client wanted.

“Cielo Blanco is a Mexican restaurant, but we resisted inserting sombreros everywhere; instead we presented a contemporary design with a hint of Mexico. So, for example the floor tiles are made from Mexican clay whilst a few neon lights and images dotted throughout the restaurant add something a little bit different.”

As well as an eye-catching interior, the restaurant has an external seating area which includes a large pagoda. The space incorporates timber along with a set of pontoon lights and provides the perfect juxtaposition of what is showcased inside the restaurant.

Cielo Blanco opened its doors and fired up its ovens for the first time in March 2013 and has been extremely successful since it made its debut. In fact, such is the success of Cielo Blanco the restaurant has recently been nominated within the Best Restaurant & Bar Design category at the SBID International Design Awards 2014.

Darren said:

“This was the first awards ceremony that we have entered into as it seemed right for us and to have a project win would be fantastic. As Cielo Blanco was the first of its kind for our client it was understandably a very personal project for all involved.”

Darren added:

“Cielo Blanco has already picked up a number of awards locally so it is great to know that we have been a part of something which people really appreciate.”
