Delighting customers and the new lessee alike, the transformational refurbishment of the picturesque White Mare at Beckermet in Cumbria has just been completed in a £400,000 scheme in which the performance of the whole contract team has been highly commended.
The project was carried out for Star Pubs & Bars and new lessee, Dianne Irving, with Bridgewater Contractors as main contractors, IMD & Associates as designers and Faithful & Gould as project managers.
The work involved a complete overhaul of the interior and exterior of the pub to create a light modern country setting, including opening up the trading area to increase dining capacity by 30% as well as a further 10% outside.
Internally, a complete new open pass kitchen allowing customers to watch food being prepared has been installed, complete with new appliances, fixtures, fittings and services. The pub also boasts a new chef to head up the new kitchen – Andy Jones from Cheshire.
The main bar area has been extended and new flagstone and wooden flooring laid, traditional furniture has been replaced with modern designs including high stools and tables, and a traditional log fire has been reinstated.
In addition, a large bar in the bottom bar area has been replaced with a smaller version, giving a much more spacious feel. An interesting new feature has also been added in the form of a glass window looking into the cellar, allowing customers to view the pub’s new Heineken state of the art smart dispensing system in operation. “You can look in, see the barrels connected and observe how it works – it’s all very high-tech,” said Diane Irving.
The dining room has also been completely refurbished, including the laying of new carpeting and wooden floors and the installation of new high quality fixed seating. In addition, a new large feature fireplace complete with wood burning effect stove has been installed to add a new focal point. Folding glazed partition doors have been installed in this area to allow the space to be divided as required for conferences and other functions, and new high tech projectors have also been added.
Other elements of the project involved the full refurbishment of the hotel’s eight bedrooms and the refurbishment of the ladies and gents toilets.
External works on the scheme included repainting of the exterior and the addition of new signage, the demolition of a number of outbuildings to the rear of the building which have been replaced by a resident seating area within a new courtyard. A new outdoor front terrace has also been created, with new seating and a canopied area, accessed by new bi-fold doors.
Celebrity chef, Jean Christophe Novelli joined locals to celebrate the opening of the pub. The opening was a great success with over 300 people attending and the bar being busy all day with people shoulder to shoulder till closing time.
“Both myself and the customers are absolutely delighted by the huge difference the project has made and everyone is impressed with the high standard of workmanship and the quality of the finishes achieved in the project,” said Dianne Irving.
“The update was really needed as nothing had been done for a number of years. The contractors did a great job and a huge amount was accomplished in the contract period of just seven weeks,” she added.
Ian Murray of IMD & Associates said: “This is a lovely rural setting and locals and visitors can benefit from the new enhanced surroundings and offering which are now brought to life. It is great to play a major part and be involved in this type of development.”
Chris Jowsey, trading director of Star Pubs & Bars, said: “We’re delighted that Dianne, who knows the area well, has taken on the White Mare, which will be one of our flagship pubs in Cumbria. The White Mare needed investment and someone with passion to take it on. It now has both and with its new look and ability to offer great quality food, drink and accommodation will do well, as it is a picture book perfect looking pub in an idyllic location.”
