The Shepherds Bush Pavilion

The Shepherds Bush Pavilion – originally constructed as a cinema – is a Grade ΙΙ listed building, dating from 1923. Restored to something inspiring, architects Flanagan Lawrence was the driving force behind the mesmerizing transformation.

Impressively, the hotel has been shortlisted for the INSIDE world festival of interiors 2015 award.

Designed by Frank Verity, the building won the RIBA London Street Architecture Award for the best London façade. The building saw damage during World War ΙΙ, then poorly repaired, subsequently was converted to a Bingo Hall in 1983, and closed its door for good in 2001. During 2009 planning permission was granted for conversion into a stunning four star hotel, with Ardmore working as the contractor.

The 320-room hotel offers conference facilities, café, restaurant, bar, retail spaces and a charming roof-top spa. The Shepherd’s Bush Pavilion draws on the influence of Art Deco cinema design, with a foyer and atrium spaces that employ simple curved surfaces in alternating bands of sophisticated black and gold.

The internally illuminated spandrel panels also minimise sound reverberation, and at ground floor level, dark-stained, ribbed timber panelling and heavy curtains serve a similar purpose. A sumptuous honey-coloured limestone floor is inlaid with brass, in two simple decorative elements. Elements of limestone and marble were provided by Unique Marble.

The main reception comprises brass strips that form a series of concentric circles at the heart of the space, reflected in the ceiling coffer above; while in the atrium, the bands define the circulation route from the reception through to the atrium bar.

The primary facades have been retained with specific modifications to bring natural light into the rooms behind. The building features a new glazed roof which follows the curved profile of the original, drawing in daylight to the upper floors of the building.

Additional insulation to the brick facades, high performance glazing, solar shading, improved air permeability and new energy-efficient plant all contribute to a significantly improved thermal performance.

Jason Flanagan, Director of Flanagan Lawrence, commented:

“Our design has been informed by a detailed understanding of the building’s history and context. Our response complements and refines the original character of the building, protecting this important heritage asset, reactivating the streetscape and providing a new point of focal interest on Shepherds Bush Green.”
