Located on the site of a former 14th Century monastery in Prague, Mandarin Oriental is a stunning and luxurious five-star hotel, which mixes monasterial architecture with a contemporary design.
The hotel boasts 79 rooms, 20 suites, a beautiful spa, restaurant and bar, as well as a range of meeting and events facilities.
The F&B areas of the hotel have recently undertaken a redesign which has not only improved services at the Mandarin Oriental, but has also allowed the hotel to unveil the unique layers of history behind the building. Award winning design agency Blacksheep was involved in all the interior design work on the project, as well as the tableware direction and all artwork & styling direction work.
Amy Wenden, Design Director of Blacksheep, said:
“The Mandarin Oriental brand promises a harmonious balance between oriental charm and a true sense of place. This sense of place provided the inspiration for the project, where we embraced the monasterial roots of the site and generated the concept of ‘sacred moments’ to inform design decisions.”
Based in Clerkenwell, London, independent design practice Blacksheep works with a range of national and international clients, including Jamie’s Italian, Wagamama and the Ritz-Carlton, amongst others. Working on the Mandarin Oriental provided Blacksheep with a fantastic opportunity to expand its portfolio with a distinctive design that respects the past and looks to the future.
Design highlights include a humble, yet enticing lobby and a folding brass plinth that ceremoniously unveils to reveal a bar. Materials used in the design include, walnut, gently worn brass and raw metal.
Nick Roberts, Design Stylist on the project, said:
“It was very important that the styling and artwork direction sat harmoniously within our concept. The carefully selected objects, speak to us about stillness and contemplation, whilst also reflecting a sense of collected time.”
PlanPoint was responsible for all project management on Mandarin Oriental, including local project work, obtaining building permits and all construction work.
The new-look F&B areas of the hotel are backed by the hotel’s stunning collection of rooms, ranging from the Superior, the Deluxe and the Premier Castle View Room through to the Oriental Suite and the Presidential Suite. Set out to accommodate two people, the Presidential Suite covers an area of 150 sq m and offers up a view of Prague Castle, Petrin Hill and the surrounding historical city.
All the rooms at the hotel have been set out with style and comfort in mind and boast a range of features including walk-in showers, a work desk, heated bathroom floors, a HD LCD TV and wired & wireless internet connection. A housekeeping service is also available twice a day.
